After some instruction from jev using Gimp I worked a pic that I had in kiwi's cc and was very surprised at what happened. Will the learning ever end.... actually I hope not because that will mean my camera is broke or I'm dead lol.

That's a step in the right direction eh? Keep experimenting, it can be fun and it helps your photography. Of course, PP can't do wonders - it's always best to start out with the best picture you can get out of the camera, but you'll be amazed at what can be rescued sometimes!
