Film scanning

Hi there,

what brand and model you guys use to scan your film?

I am looging for a scanner for myself, but dont know which one is good in the market.

Any input will will good.

I use a canoscan 8400f that I picked up for $100.

The best for price is the V700.

When looking at scanners the most important thing is how the negative holders perform. If they let the film bend or dip just a little you will loose alot of sharpness. In my opinion the sharpness or a scanner is much more important than the dpi. The canoscan has terrible film holders. I am looking at getting some ANR glass to sort this out.

35mm film is the hardest to scan, and if this is what you use, a dedicated film scanner is clearly the best option. i have both the Canon 8800f scanner for general scanning and also 120 film, and I have the dedicated Nikon Coolscan 5000 for my 135 film. I use a V700 Epson. Excellent scanner and flat bed.
Cost $750.
Worth every cent, there are reviews around which put it in similar light to nikon 9000 at 1/10 the cost.

the epson certainly gets great reviews, and has the versatility of a flatbed. if you only want to scan film however, the Nikon V is only around $300 more than the epson.

Hi Beani. (Have you bought one yet?) As also above, an Epson V700, but loading the 35mm neg film into the carrier is a bit bothersome. I haven't checked specs from many other brands, but for negs, make sure it can scan at more than 8 bits per channel, or you'll tend to lose info in shadows and highlights. The V700 can do 16 bits per channel, and 6400 dpi optical! Also, it scans all sizes from 35 mm (I can't remember if also APS-c) to 8x10 inch transparencies. I'm about to start scanning some of my negs taken with the old RB67. Am...
