    Hi FB,

I've just sold my 300mm f4L IS. It was a good lens, not too heavy, sharp pics, reasonably fast AF, not as fast as the 70-200 f2.8 (fast AF I've used), but quicker that most. Used it in conjunction with a 1.4xII with good results. I used mine on a monopod most of the time and using that I was able to get down to 1/60sec without any motion blur (that's was the IS version).

Having said all that, I wouldn't recommend it, especially if you are after birds as 300mm is usually not enough. Spend about the same money on a 70-200mm F4.0 IS which is a much more versatile lens that you'll get much more use out of, then get the 1.4x if you want to step up to 280 (almost 300mm).

The other option that is a bit more expensive but again, you’ll get much more use with, is the 100-400mm which a number of people on the forum do use for birds (I’ve never used this but haven’t heard anything bad about it) or if you're actually after a prime try the 400mm f5.6L.

    Good luck!

Look at Darksome's work in the bird forum - he uses the 100-400 L.

My friend has 300mm f4 and i have tried it on his 5D mk2, it a decent lens and he's more than happy with his. But i would go with Phill B's advise.
