I'm considering buying CS4. I can find it locally and on the net for around the $1200 - $1300 mark. While doing so I wondered if getting CS3 was a viable option. I found them for next to nothing.
Can I still but a legal and registrable version of CS3 and if not is the abovementioned price range for CS4 reasonable?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I have CS3 and generally its pretty much overkill but when it comes to cloning, nothing beats CS3 or 4 and this is prime reason I purchased CS3. As for buying CS4 as opposed to CS3, I couldn't see any reason to upgrade but then I use a Mac so am not plagued by the slow working of CS3.
CS4 is overkill for anyone who is not a full time professional photographer, seriously
CS3 is more than enough for part time photographers
Even better .. get GIMP ... its free and I bet you it will do everything you need it to

Get work to buy it and then you use it home free / legally!
Lately I have noticed various companies advertising CS4 in a way they haven't of recent times. This makes me think it's about to be run out and upgraded. If that happens it may be worth hanging on to see what deals you can get on CS4.
Does anyone have any clues on this?

A work mate tells me that CS4 is the way to go if working with RAW [NEF] files, as CS3 doesnt handle this type of file .... is this true?

There's nothing wrong with CS3; I would still be using it were it not for the fact that I switched to a Mac last year.
Where you'll run into problems is with newer cameras and Adobe Camera Raw. If you use ACR, it doesn't support cameras like the Canon EOS 5D and presumably a dozen other newer cameras. If you're happy to use your camera manufacturer's RAW converter, no problem, as you can still use CS3.
OK, so using my new D300s or the old D70 with CS3 and Nikons 'NEF converter' all should work!
