SB600 used with shoot through umbrella

Hey guys,

I have a SB600 and wondering whether its powerful enough to use with a shoot through umbrella as an off camera strobe.

Was tempted in shedding some decent cash on a lighting kit but the missus has said otherwise, fair enough considering we need the money for our wedding next month.

So would the SB600 suffice for the time being with a backdrop(and stand) and a couple of reflectors??

Yep .. you can get some great results from a speedlight and a translucent umbrella. Have a look here for some ideas and here for some bits and pieces which will help you along.

Definately, we've used an SB-600 through a shoot through white umbrella and it works fine.

If you're going to shoot outdoors then I suggest a softbox.
I used one on Saturday and loved it, it was so much more efficient compared to when I shoot outside with a translucent umbrella.

Best $130 spent

I can absolutely vouch for that .. I was there and Eds light was beautifully soft. His results from the weekend are very very impressive.

It would work great, you could probably dial down the power to like 1/8 to get faster recycle times too.

EDIT: Just make sure you get a very sturdy stand. I found those 1.8m ones inadequate. I use a 2.8m stand and it's great for that.

Sweet this seems the way to go then. Maybe later i'll get an SB900 and use it on the camera (bounced) and the SB600 off camera with the softbox mentioned.

Why not use the 900 on the softbox and the 600 to blow out the backdrop?
