    The break -- 8 ball

I bought an (expensive) ND filter and wanted to try some second curtain flash. By virtue of trial and error, my mate and I got a few acceptable frames, but the physical setup of the table was a little restricting.

That looks like fun and it has worked reasonably well.
I particularly like the trail of the white ball as it has changed direction.

Prof. Julius Sumner Miller would have been impressed!

Nicely done. Maybe a lower angle next time.

nic ework Graham. I have been meaning to try this for a long time on our table. I think you would have to try lots of shots to get a good one.

Thanks fellas. I took quite a while to get the settings somewhere near right -- we did that using only the white and one ball.
Then I got a dozen or so shots that are sort of OK and then we adjourned for a "pick-me-up".

That was the end of that exercise!

    Hi Graham

In checking on my posts today - Decided it was time I started concentrating on my photography again.

I spent time reading properly what I should have done months ago.

Your wonderful shot on " The Break - 8 Ball" could you tell me what settings you used on your camera i.e. a tutorial on what you did .

How did your Great Ocean Road shots come out using your ND filter?

My problem that I lack confidence in even trying these sorts of shots, especially with my new Nikon D700 ( which I find so complicated).

    regards

    Sue

I took quite a few break shots on my friends full size billiard table. I got him to practice doing the break and hitting the white at a consistent speed every time.
I pushed the shutter as he hit the white ball from the other end of the table and simply experiment until I got the effect I wanted.
This shot was taken at ISO 1600 because fo the poor light. It was taken with the Canon 10-22 at 22mm and f/4.5. The camera was on AV and the shutter speed was 0.3 of a second.

I have not got the shots I wanted of the Great Ocean Road -- I just can't crack the right weather when I am over there.
