Very fast card readers

Hi all....can someone suggest to me a good quality, reasonably priced external multi card reader, or at least a CF reader that is very fast. My inbuilt one in my PC is painfully slow and I find myself downloading pix directly from camera as it's a lot faster, but I want to stop doing so....cheers .

I bought one a couple of months ago from Dick Smith. It just plugs into the USB, seems quite fast. Was only about $40.

Col, I recently bought a Zipp branded reader from Big W, USB2 was only about $14.00 and is heaps faster than the reader in my computer.

Ive got a Sandisk Imagemate reader, no real probs

Depends on two things
a) Your USB is USB 2 and the 'puter is recognising that
b) Speed of your memory cards

Computer Warehouse, Dick Smith all carry these.
I used SDHC cards and a Sandisk reader - quick on my main system - quicker than the inbuilt on my work notebook.

Yeah I'd be looking into it more thoroughly Col, before laying out any more ca$h

Make a list of the devices, what capability they have.

There'd be nothing more annoying than purchasing more new gear only to find out that the PC is only USB1.1 and not USB2 compatible which will be the real problem bottleneck.

Also having a faster card is going to give you more of a boost too.

Sandisk II's are a good starting point, but I've also found that my generic 8Gb CF cards are faster than my Sandisk II 4Gb card!

But having switched from a non name brand USB1 reader to a Apacer brand(are they generic? ) USB2 reader has helped a little bit too.
Approx 4G's of images may take about 5-10 mins or so.

If you like I can try to do a comparative speed test again, but having used a program called HDTach, it also found (approx) a 2Mb/s advantage in my generic 8Gig cards, over the 4Gig Sandisks.

If you have firewire ports in your computer, you can't go past the sandisk firewire CF reader

My memory cards are not the fastest out Kym, but transfer between camera and PC is quite fast, fast enough for now anyway...just slow on my PC card reader. If the card was the main problem wouldn't it then also be very slow straight from camera?
