I've created a Car Lighting 'how to' guide a while ago and I've recently added some useful info on painting with light here. Thought it might be of interest. This kind of thing is never finished and I hope to keep adding to it as I can.

Unreal John, very few pro's are willing to share their secrets, you not only do that, but give a full tutorial. I for one am very very appreciative!

John, you have produced an extremely good photo and from reading through your linked pages you have also produced an excellent tutorial. It's not the sort of shooting I have considered doing in the past but your shots and relatively simple setup leaves me wondering about the future ---------

A thoroughly excellent post all round , top quality pics and a tutorial that will help many and provide food for thought amongst plenty more.

I too reckon the tutorial is tops. Perhaps not something I will ever follow but it's a great read with plenty of detail. Useful for the topic but also potentially useful for other subject matter. Ta.

Great shots - I like how you 'colour matched' the cars to the background - very effective.

Just one (probably stupid) question, but how come when you are walking around the cars, light painting them, that there is no hint of your body in the image? I assume it has something to do with exposure time, and how fast you are moving? or do you dress like a ninja?

Thanks. That's the thing, painting with light can be applied to all kinds of stationary objects, and even moving ones for that matter. I'm just about to do some product shots of some smallish widgets that I'll light that way.

Thanks, I wasn't really trying to match colours, just trying to make things look good. On the other hand, yeah, yeah, that was my plan all along...

When you are in a dark environment, hence the long exposure, light builds up where ever you place it in the image and it stays dark where none is added. If you walk around the image in relatively dark clothes, don't spend too much time in one spot and keep light from spilling onto yourself then you won't appear in the image. Ninja, LOL...

I like the idea of people sharing and am happy to do so. I often want to know how people do the stuff that I see but unfortunately not everyone wants to share. Each to his/her own.
