    SSD Scams

I found these articles in another forum and thought to post them here as well.

They are here in OOF, rather then in Technology - H/W and S/W, because it's
the scams I'm referring to, not the drives themselves...

    Western Digital:
    https://www.extremetech.com/computin...with-slow-ssds

    Samsung:
    https://www.extremetech.com/computin...-its-customers

    - And somewhere in the mix Crucial is mentioned as well. I suppose they didn't
have enough space to mention every-other-co-and-their-dog

I recently also heard about a scam involving slower RAM substitution also.

Feel free to list your scams below...

Saw a YouTube video on Linus Tech Tips channel, regarding laptop manufacturers using different types of RAM modules that seemed to affect system performance by around 20%. And such a component change wasn't shown on the specs page.

I guess that counts as a scam, since the manufacturers are probably knowingly swapping the components.

    efinitely.

A new one that came up on the news the other night was presented as a legitimate
sort of pursuit: you buy into "virtual" muscle cars, typically from the 70s. The "logic"
was that if you can't afford millions on a real and rare one, you could have the "next
best thing" for mere thousands. - And it doesn't stop there

This is the story they were mashing, but a wider search shows lots of other aspects
of reality that are being "non-fungibly tokenised"

I just can't wrap my head around the concept of Non-Fungible Tokens

To think that around 30 to 40 years ago, the concept of a handheld device that could record thousands of high quality images onto a little plastic card would probably have blown peoples' minds

Here in Singapore, many people have been falling prey to telephone / SMS scams. The callers will try various ruses, from "your family member is about to be charged by the police." to "your internet connection is hacked"

Ha-ha... Ditto. I get up to 3 calls a day some days, threatening arrest or disconnection of the
internet. If I'm at the computer I play them back a message about fraud investigation and call
origin tracing. "They" usually hang up half way through

r/scams on reddit is a good forum to read about current scams doing the rounds. you get a good feel for what to keep an eye out for.

^It seems to be that NON-scams are becoming the exception
