Okay Am, I'll put your name down for an R5 and and R6 based on your endorsement and apparent like for them.

All I need now, are your credit card details so I can place the order.

You should get them delivered by the end of July.

    Cheers

I'd quite like an R5 to replace my unpleasant little R. On the other hand, it's crazy expensive for what would only be a backup camera. Sure, I'm prone to just spending the money regardless when I want something, but first I have to actually want it, and Canon just aren't making new stuff that appeals.

Will I spend the money anyway? Very likely, but it won't go on an R5. For the same money, I can have one of these - https://mccannsmusic.com.au/product/...ommy-emmanuel/ - and one of these - https://billyhydemusic.com.au/produc...d-ebony-board/

That's a no-brainer. Canon needs to try harder for my dollar.

R6 looks very appealing. Great all-rounder.

edit: man that's an old signature. Shows how long it's been since I've been here

I'll have to figure out a way to edit that sig now.

Near the top right of any AP page, Settings. On LHS of that page, edit away at various things.

Looking at some of the "canon speak", they say that the AF is a brand new implementation and includes the trifecta of Eye, Face & Body tracking, based o some form of "deep learning".

It appears that when locked onto an eye, if the say, model or person rotates their head, then the AF switched to "Head" and can then re-acquire the Eye when it returns to the frame. I think this may also apply to animals and birds. If this means that the AF (in the appropriate Zone Mode) can track a bird in flight or a bee in flight across the frame, then this would be very useful as often with a Single Point AF I have lost the bird or bee and the AF locks onto something else.

I would hesitate to immediately believe that this may also work with a small bird in the rain forest, where the bird moves very rapidly, in an erratic manner and there is the problem of tangled foliage to fool the AF.

Looks like the R5 won't hit the shops until end of July and the R6 sometime in August.

    Cheers

Yesterday (Sat) I received an e-mail from my local camera shop letting me know that they an EOS R6 in stock, so I dropped in for a look and left with it in hand.

This morning (Sun) I took it out to Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens to test out the "Animal Eye" AF Tracking and I was very, very impressed with its performance. In terms of AF performance, it "found" the eye each time and locked onto it without me having to keep the AF Point fixed on the eye using my cognition and motor skills.

I could not believe how many keepers I got with the Dragonfly in flight, it blew me away.

When I open each images file in Canon's DPP, the AF Point, as depicted by a "Red Square" was on the head/eye of the target.

    Cheers

We visited the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary so I could attend the Free Flight Birds of Prey Show and test out the EOS R6 AF on BIF and from that one session, I am very happy with how the AF managed to grab onto these birds as they flew at insane speeds.

Due to COVID-19 seating restrictions, I wasn't in a favourable position in the undercover seating area and the Bird Handlers often came between me and the subject.

However, i did come away with enough shots that I would be as comfortable using the Canon EOS R6 or my 5D Mk IV.

    Cheers

I took a punt on the currently discounted Canon RF 600mm F11 lens, hoping for a simple, compact and lightweight telephoto that I could slip into my gear bag "just in case".

So far it looks to perform as expected and last night I fitted the RF x1.4 Extender and took a photo of the Moon. It was quite nice to be holding and fitting a light weight camera/lens to my photo tripod, for a quick set up and shoot in the back garden.

This is a full res crop from the centre of the EOS R6 frame.

    Cheers

Compared to my Canon 100mm F2.8L Macro lens, I had previously found the Canon 180mm F3.5L Macro lens to be very slow at auto-focusing and so gave up trying on moving insects, relegating it to tripod mounted shooting only for slow moving subjects.

However, when I fitted it to my Canon EOS R6 and gave it a trial run in the back garden this morning, it seemed to AF a bit faster and more reliably, so there may well some life left in the old dog yet.

Taken hand held, with the Canon EOS R6 using the Canon EF-EOS R mount adapter.

    Cheers

    Hi Dennis,
I'm looking to grab the EOS R6 as it looks to best suit my style of shooting nowadays.
Wondering if you'd provide some more feedback with the use you've had since this post,
    Greatly appreciated,
    Blue.
P.S - In short, are you using RF lenses or EF and the adaptor for EF glass?
