    A STARK Juxtaposition!

The year 2018 | GIMP the editor

I remember doing bull-wrestling in ancient Crete...

Using GIMP is the modern version!

Even the usual shortcuts, like Ctrl-Z to undo, is replaced by Esc.
Then try to end drawing a selection
Try to open two images side-by-side

The simplest functions are easperating, while the more involved are unworkable fiction

I propose to rename it GRUMP!

The word GIMP should become a synonym of Lament

Oh noes! I was hoping to switch to Gimp once I cancel my Adobe CC Photography. Is it possible to change shortcuts etc to what you want them to be?

It probably is, Bianca. Are you a good aircraft maintenance engineer/theoretical particle physicist/specialist neurosurgeon...?
Fair dinkum! Most things don't bovver me too much, but every time I try to do the merest thing using GIMP...!

Well, I find I spend more time trying to... think of feet squelching in mud and you're trying to move forward

Hmmmmm. None of the above. I have done a bit of programming in my time, however! I'll check it out when I have some time. Not being able to view 2 images at the same time is a bit painful though.

APparently, the workaround - but when I tried it was cumbersome and I got lost - is to have 2 instances
    of GIMP open

Why are you complaining about something that's free?

Just because I’m nosey and curious, why are you canceling your CC subscription? The ongoing cost?

Mainly the cost. I'm not a professional, so I don't earn money with my photos. I only really take photos for myself, when I travel. I write a travel blog whenever I travel, as a sort of journal and I geotag, title and edit the photos and then export some of them to put on my Google Photos so I can look at them whenever I want.

Aside from that, I've never particularly liked the Adobe way of doing things - they can't even be consistent amongst their own software - although the last version of PS seems to want to address that in a small way with the most recent update. Also, I've found it buggy sometimes and both PS and LR crash whenever I close them - I've been blaming it on Win7 but I don't know that's the cause for sure. And Lightroom Classic CC is so slow.

Having said all that - I may yet stick with it because I do love the ease of doing Panoramas (of which I take a lot!). It's also the only cataloging software I'm aware of that you can use for geotagging. Picasa used to do it but that functionality no longer works. I know there's other software out there that you can use to geotag, but it's not so convenient.

Do you have a CC subscription yourself?

    Thanks for the info, Bianca.

No, no subscription for me. Like you, I certainly don’t make money nor do I ever expect to make money from photography. I share my photos with my family and this forum but essentially it is just a hobby for myself. In fact, probably well over 50% of the photos I take are only viewed by me anyway.

So yeah, I can’t justify significant costs either. The main thing for me, though, and my level of PP is that CS6, which I still use, is more than adequate for me.

Good luck with the blog. One thing I’d love to do one day but I have the computer knowledge of a horse.

There's plenty of places you can get a free blog without needing much in the way of computer knowledge. If you can post to this forum, you're most likely able to post a blog entry. But being free, your site visitors may see advertising, depending on which hosting platform you use.

Adobe CC comes with a free web Portfolio (and quite a few other nice freebies), but I haven't taken advantage of that.

    And apparently very short arms

But I agree, why pay for something when you can get a viable alternative for free. But if you are having issues then no wonder I am having a hard time learning the finer points

As far as I can understand things, the best way of working on two different images at the same time appears to be open an image and then use the "layers" feature to open layers and use that as a type of window. So you can have separate images in each layer, work on both and then I guess you achieve your goal.

Is that a workable solution AM, albeit not the perfect solution?
    I use a Nikon D200 and a Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens . I do most of my editing in Gimp 2.10

My friends refer to me as "Snooks"

No, it's more cumbersome. I seemed to get more control with the two instances of GIMP, but it's not
    something I will embrace.

You''re right about getting used to it, though it feels like using a submarine to go to the corner shops

Any software feels odd at first and I guess the feeling is enhanced when you have been using a similar program. I haven't really done anything in APS because its a commercial package that you had to pay for, I've only had a quick fiddle on a friends PC that has it installed.

Except for different names of features and tools, it looks almost identical. Sort of like driving a Ford compared to a BMW. You just need to get accustomed to the wipers and indicators being on the opposite side of the column, but after that.....a car is a car.

You're right there, Snooks. I like your analogy.

I've been trying to start (using) GIMP for years. It has some good features, but it's mostly arcane

PS: Anyway, I don't dislike it much at all. Apart from what I've lamented above, it's quite OK on
    single images.

Make sure that you are using the latest which is 2.10.8 because it underwent a very big upgrade in the beginning of the year and a smaller upgrade only a week or so ago.

(I had to google up what "arcane" meant) lol

Arcane? Good to see you are looking for something other than the free arcane CS2 you previously recommended AM. Gimp has plenty to offer and is simply not arcane. It's useful free PPing software.
