Free Flickr Members please be aware of new limits being imposed

Free Flickr Members please be aware of new limits giving free users a MAXIMUM of 1000 photos hosted, any over that threshold of 1000 will eventually be DELETED by the new owners of Flickr if those account holders do not upgrade their accounts to Pro.

Thanks. I don't have a Flickr account. I liked their gobbldygook, though - bad English and all:

"Today, we’re announcing updates to our Free and Pro accounts that mark a new step forward for Flickr.
To be candid, we’re driving toward the future of Flickr with one eye on the rearview mirror; we’re certain
that Flickr’s brightest days lay ahead, but we remain acutely aware that past missteps have alienated
some members of our community. We also recognize that many of the clues for how best to build the
future of Flickr can be found in our own, rich history."

What the carp does the first italicised phrase mean?
"Lay" ahead? - Must be talking about the supply of eggs
Not to mention other misplaced punctuation, etc...

But I suppose I shouldn't complain; the little I read did not contain "going forward"
Yep. Primed to make more mistakes in the future

Well, I suppose the 1000 images can be maximum size
    CC, Image editing OK.

I cannot say I am surprised by this. I joined Flikr a while ago to look at the work of better photographers than me (like Adam Brice) and started loading up a few of my better shots. I find the process quite slow and frustrating but at least the images can be seen in full resolution.

With a few million users uploading big files Flikr must be paying a motza for bandwidth and it is hardly fair to expect them to continue this service for free. The mid-tier account of around $50 per annum is hardly going to bankrupt anyone, certainly it is less than the $120 I currently pay for my online backup in Dropbox.

In the words of Milton Freedman "there is no such thing as a free lunch."

Colin. Take a look at Google Drive. I dropped my dropbox..hehe. and swapped to Google Drive. But it depends on how much storage space you need. Dropbox has 3TB for $17.50 a month. Google Drive has 2TB for $12.49 a month. I am using Google Drive's 200GB plan at present, for $4.39 a month. Depending on your space needs, Google Drive offers more plans across data sizes than dropbox. I just figured why pay more for empty storage space that I wasn't using and I could upgrade when I need more space, rather than paying for it now, and not using it all.

USD .96 cents a week for unlimited storage doesn't seem like a big deal to me. Some of the biggest complainers whining and moaning about the free ride being over all over the internet, when looking at their Exif data they have a lot of money in bodies and glass.

Some people really just feel entitled to hold their hands out and receive.

Just veering slightly off topic here...those with PS could always make use of 'Portfolio' which is included with your subscription as another choice/alternative. You're already paying for it

How much space do you get, Gazza? There are other "free cloud storages" too, like from Toshiba
and I think WD, when you buy a drive. It's not much, from memory

    - - - Updated - - -

Oops! I just saw it's up to 100GB, which is not bad at all. I used to have 25 GB with OneDrive,
but now it says 15GB max. I wrote to them, but they have gotnot got back "soon"
    like they said they would.

    Phew!...thanks for that...I had no-idea

I only use it for hosting images that I post here on AP and avoid creating large images so they open in a respectable time. I have one of those painfully-slow-NBN-connections....

Why? Why should everything be for free? Or are you unhappy with the increased subscription amount from last year,
I had joined up about four years ago but did nothing with it & only started to actually use it in recent months, so I'm OK with it. If it looks like I'll be filling it up then I guess I'll consider paying, but on the other hand, with a 1000 photo limit I would be more discerning with what images I upload.

Yes. There's a Royal Commission currently looking into this sort of thing.

    Further.
I only use flickr as a way to up load photos to AP to share with you wonderful people here. I will not be paying anything to anyone just to share my photos with you all. So I'll just deal with the 1000 photo limit.

The converse also holds - "why not?" - powered by "what's changed?"

How was it free before? I suspect other pecuniary streams. I don't know the ins and outs of Flickr finances. Was it advertising?

Google Drive allows unlimited photo uploads if your photos are smaller than 16mp. Larger than that adds to your quota. Surely that is sufficient for posting photos for online use?

Not sure what Google Drive does to photos, but they certainly take a hit in quality.

Never examined the quality closely. Will have to have a closer look.

Same here, but the main reason has been: trying to get a decent link for the image in Google Drive

If you have a Gmail account, you get a total 15GB storage - shared between everything, including mail.

Just as an aside about Google Drive...

Linking an image from there is still nigh impossible. Apparently you could in the (dim and distant) past.
After that, you could alter Google's share code to still make it work as an embed code, but that
apparently stopped in 2016. The best I found was an on-line site where you get the "share code"
for your Google-hosted image and paste it into a box on a website. That then generates a "proper"
(BBcode) that you can use to embed an image in a post, like on AP. To even find this "solution" I had
to use "in 2018" in the search text. - What irony: Googling how to Google

But would you trust a website that converts your image links for you?
