A matt latter. You do not want any specular reflections.
    CC, Image editing OK.

I went looking for some info on "making a beauty dish" and found almost nothing
but lashings of GUFF and commercial CRASS! I also looked for "design", "optics", etc.

There no end of how to do it videos, guides, etc - all, IMO, to little real avail.

The only "article" (and brief) was from Wiki, which "mentioned parabolic reflector" and "focal point".
I took it to mean that the flash, etc is placed at the focus of a parabolic reflector so as to produce a
[near] parallel beam of light. However, I wasn't even confident of that interpretation.

I saw lots of stainless steel "salad dish" DIYs that looked questionable at best (and near laughable!).
It seems people are falling over themselves to show how "easy" it is to make...
[something that someone then calls] a beauty dish.

Anyway, here's the Wiki reference, FWIW.
NB that even this Wiki article contains the following puzzling statement:
"...device that uses a parabolic reflector to distribute light towards a focal point..."

Good luck with it - what ever it may turn out to be.
