    Spammers and other fantastic beasts

Of late we (mods) have had to deal with some spammers getting past our defences and managing to get onto the site and post. One of the things they have been posting about is some rock/pop music bands, their upcoming tours and linking to fake sites where you can buy "tickets". Read that as get your credit card details stolen.

So in the interests of helpful advice, I decided that if they can be spammers who can get past our defences, I would use some Ausphotography magic on them.

I setup the site so that when they type a certain word, it automatically gets replaced with a different word. Overnight one of the spammers got onboard and posted his stuff. He must have found it rather annoying when he submitted his thread and it posted like this:

    Bon Spammer Tour 2017
Bon Spammer Tour 2017, Bon Spammer is a rock band from Sayreville, New Jersey. Formed in 1983, Bon Spammer consists of lead singer and namesake Jon Bon Spammer, pianist and keyboardist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres, lead guitarist Phil X, and bassist Hugh McDonald. Wikipedia

I think most of you will be able to work out what word I set to be replaced by the word spammer

So at 6.00am when I climbed out of bed, I removed his thread and banned him, and sent his details off to our anti-spamming organisation. My job here is done.

So what happens if there is legitimate discussion on the merits of Bon Spammer?

Do you mean Bon Spammer, or Bon Spammer?

    Or a tray of Bon-Bons?

    (Or a tin of Spam)

I suppose the other word that might be caught up in this is jovial.. as is Santa is a jovial chap..

edit: Nope.. so the word replacer is smart enough to know jovial and j o v i are different. So Jon Bon Jovial it is!

So they were back this afternoon and posted about an Ed Sheeran and Depeche mode tours. So the Bon Jovi spam filter was gotten around.

I have now made it more generic. So that if the words T O U R 2017 (without the spaces) is used, it will replace that with the word spam. I hope it doesnt catch out any members as it is a more generic word phrase. But it might just be enough to stop these spammers.

So if someone now types Bon Jovi Spammer, or Ed Sheeran Spammer, or Depeche Mode Spammer, they get caught out.

Warbs. From "memoir", they change each time. Also from the same source, they do get blocked.

Yes, I know they change AM. I also know that you can block a range. I block lots of ranges on my own site. It just depends on how many of the nearly 7 billion people on the planet you want to be able to access your site. The biggest problem is if they use a bigpond account. Then you can't really block a range, because these are all within your target market.

I just block all IP's for China, India, Pakistan, Korea, Brasil, Poland, Argentina, and a few others.

My guess, they are using a VPN to hide their real location. So far the IP addresses have been all over the place.

Some of the more recent ones:
    bonjovitour2017 119.30.47.1
    ironmaidentour2017 180.211.252.82
    u2tour2017 180.211.187.61
    depeche 162.211.179.188

and we already block Russia/China and Nigeria entirely

My site uses SMF and not vBulletin but does the latter have an httpBL plugin / mod ?

The project honeypot site is back on line for registrations and it manages to detect and deter a lot of spammers up front before they can even register....

We use stopforumspam.com which stops between 10-20 spammer registrations every hour.
