Best interchangeable lens camera for video (under $1000)

Hi guys

Friend asked me about what camera to buy for his son who is 13 and studying media at school and was looking for a recommendation for something he can grow into in future.

Any suggestions? Video is out of my area of knowledge.

Well, MM. I (usually) KNOW NOTHING... about these things, but I might present a recent anecdotal report.
I was visiting a professional photographer, who, I was satisfied, knew his stuff and was not mostly a windbag,
and we discussed at length his NIKON system for STILL SHOTS. And then he got onto VIDEO photography,
and there he spoke highly of a couple of SONY cameras THAT HE USES, one or BOTH of which did 4K video.
Both camera sysytems were "DSLRs".

Well, having a head full of Nikon talk still, I did not grasp all that he was telling me of the SONYs. I just clearly
understood it was the Nikons for his stills and the Sonys (rather latest) for video.

Try Panasonic, perhaps? Many of their models will do brilliant 4K video. The Olympus mFTs cameras do not offer 4K video (except for the yet to be sold E-M1 MkII, but it is far out of your price range as well).

However, the Olympus 5 axis IBIS is fantastic for video apparently. Get something like the Olympus E-M10 MkII with one of their MSC lenses (Movie Stills Compatible ... ) like the 14-42 EZ kit lens. Should be under your budgetary limit, and provide an excellent camera to grow into.

Australian professional videographer, John Brawley, uses an E-M5 MkII for videography that is fantastic. No matter what you gave me, I couldn't even come vaguely close to what he can do, but it gives some idea of what is achievable with such gear.

I have this lens, and it is not nearly as bad as the reviewers give it credit for! What's new ... . I use mine for 'social photography', where its minute size and weight make it ideal.

Link to this camera at Olympus Oz, as the specs at DigiDirect are wrong. The camera has 5 axis IBIS, not 3 axis IBIS per DigiDirect.

Panasonic GH series tend to be the go-to for serious video shooting, at least in the m43 world that I'm familiar with.
GH5 has been announced but not shipped yet so the GH4 could be on heavy discounts, possibly entering the required budget range.

Blackmagic is another interchangeable lens cameras that are used in serious videography and from the reports I've read about them, are very good bang for your buck for what you get. And what you get is RAW video. I believe they have some entry level cameras in the sub $1000 category.
