Visiting the UK in September, where to go and what to see?

    Hi all.

I'm off to Europe and the UK later in August for 10 weeks.

I have most of my trip sorted except for around 10 days that I will have in the UK.

So far I'm planning at least a week of this in Scotland. I have a few ideas of what I want to do but I'd really like to hear from those who have been there and can recommend some of their favourite places and experiences in the area (area I'm interested in so far is roughly a triangle encompassing lock Lomond, Skye and Inverness.

It will be just me and my camera

Go out to Rugby and see if you cannot hire a canal barge for a day, wonderful experience and some great photos to be had. While you are out that way Starford-Upon-Avon is interesting, You can get to see Shakespeare's home.

On your way to Scotland, consider a stop in the Lakes district. Lake Windermere is stunning and there are some lovely walks. Nearby you can visit Beatrix Potter's (of Peter Rabbit book fame) home.

If you go west, Chester is interesting cause the town is in the tudor style.

Just a few thoughts from me.

I have been to the UK twice, once in 2010 for 2 weeks and in 2013 or 3 weeks. I can only comment on those places that I went to and loved them all.

Gloucester is a great area, we used it as a base in 2010 and visited the local sites from there. Plenty of old churches like Gloucester Cathedral and Tewkesbury Cathedral nearby. Bath (highly recommended) is also close by and also Bourton-on-the water. Lacock - a period piece village which they use for many of the period shows from the UK - they shot some of Pride and Prejudice there as well as some scenes from Harry Potter at Lacock Abbey. The Fox Talbot Museum is also worth a visit at Lacock as it has the history of William Henry Fox Talbot who was credited with taking the first negative film back in 1835, really worth a visit as is the whole Lacock area. Broadway which is another lovely old village is also within easy striking distance from Gloucester. If you want to photograph birds, Slimbridges Wetland Centre is also close to Gloucester.

We went to Scotland in 2013 and stayed in a B&B in Fort Augusta at the south end of Loch Ness and used it as a base for trips from there. We went to Eilean Donan Castle, which is a must do for a night shot as well as a day shot. Gallery here:

On the way up to Scotland we stopped at Coventry overnight, then Alnwick as a base for the Farne Islands so as we could photograph the Puffins.

Anyway, these are just some things to mull over. I hope you have a great trip!
