I guess that I, like most of you, read a lot of reviews and forums, looking for oft mentioned attributes and faults, before making a decision.
Unfortunately, living out of town with a 200k round trip to the big smoke, I don't have the luxury of a quick visit to my local B&M store to actually try the object of my desires.

I think there are many examples of this including people taking photography writers as gospel. The recent example I saw was a lens review from the angry photographer of the 105 f/1.4 which he didn't have in his hand. He was complaining about the number of pieces of glass in the lens and his entire premise was that more glass=poor lens. This logic doesn't explain the apparent miracle that Sigma produced with the 50 ART which almost matches the Zeiss and has a large number of elements. Sigms must have Chuck Norris or Jesus on their design team.
