This could be interesting! What do you think of the winning photo in the Moran Portait Prize

The Moran Portrait Prize is one of the pinnacles of portrait photography competitions in Australia, if not the Pinnacle one.

Here is a link to this year's winning photo : http://procounter.com.au/2015/11/05/...ner-announced/

    What do YOU think?

I don't know what they've done to it, but that version of it looks like a holiday snap and I'm sure it must be better than that. I suspect that they have used a print version of it for screen display which makes it look very overexposed. The surf photo is the same, and again, I'm sure it's not.

Did they actually have judges or did they simply go on facebook "likes"?

Yeah, sorry, I don't know who the judges were but according to their definition, contemporary equals "best b grade iPhone photo".

I don't get it, I wouldn't pay $5 for that photo so I'm not quite sure how the judges picked it.

I really liked all of the winners, except the actual winner's.
Maybe they had a few wines and thought is was funny?
    Been here, not done that.

Well, a result like that certainly encourages me to enter photo contests. Could be half a chance.

The photo in the story is winner of the 2015 Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize.
The winner of the of the Moran Portait Prize is at top ...... Moran Portait Prize

Even so the contemporary photo doesn't look overly contemporary.

He picked up 50 grand for that image! Nice work! This photography malarkey is obviously much easier than I thought.

If you need me I'll be rummaging though my box of holiday happy snaps looking for a suitable entry for next years competition. There's a couple of whimsical yet still contemporary shots from the Big Prawn at Ballina that I reckon will fit the bill very nicely indeed.

Sorry, can't take to the Contemporary winning photo. It looks like a snapshot to me. All the other prize winners are fine and it is not hard to find merit in them. The main Moran Portrait winner I like very much.

Well this competition result just reinforces my beliefs on how subjective judging photography can be. (In a big way.)

Looks like the sort of shot someone would take with a phone in passing and not think twice about it.

Guess I'll never have any chance of winning that competition, I don't really do the happy snap shots much less consider entering one into a competition.

Think the judges liked the idea but is it a winner?

The Wave must have won. Just a clerical error.
