Nikon Coolpix point and shoot battery question

A few years ago I bought a coolpix. I got good use of the battery for a few cycles.

It is a couple of years down the track and now I charge it, and just about as quickly as it is charged it is flat.

What is a nominal life of the batteries?

About what you now experience.
I doubt there is any real way to estimate/guess/hypothesise on a nominal life of a battery.
Everyone's usage pattern would be too variable to allow that. It'd be like trying to estimate the elevation of .. 'high'!

FWIW tho, for almost every lithium ion battery I consciously notice, they predominant estimation if for about 500 charge cycles.

Sorry for the slow reply. Things have been happening.

I wouldn't have thought that I have cycled it 500 times, but there again.
I guess I may just have to chalk it up to bad luck.

Lithium batteries also don't take too kindly to being overcharged or drained too deeply. Overcharging is not likely as circuitry in the charger (or is that in the battery?!?) usually prevent that from happening, but excessive discharge can occur if the battery sits long enough without getting charged. That is, batteries slowly loose charge over time, and if the camera remains unused for long enough with a discharged battery, the charge remaining will continue to discharge to a point that is not good for the health of the battery.
