A couple of years too late now for me to get excited.

It looks like this may actually happen, with the announcement of a couple of FF lens as well.

For some strange reason I've been reluctant to part with my SMC Pentax-M 50mm F1.7.

Actually it was a wrench to let any of my Pentax lens go as they were such fine pieces of equipment.

Good on you for hanging in there Kym.
    Cheers

    The question is(or are):

    which sensor?
Apparently(rumours) Canon is considering using a new 50ish Mp Sony sensor on one of their new 5D replacements.
Do Pentax go with what's already out there(is. 24 or 36Mp) or do they go straight for the super high res jugular?

I think this explains the lack of a name and firm release date.
    Maybe they're planning two versions!
A high resolution 50Mp version and a low resolution 36Mp version too

    Bummer!

it should have a minimum 50Mp now .. just for the sake of keeping up with the Jones!

Now that the 50Mp Canon 5D is official, it's only a matter of time(less than 2 years, more likely less than 1) that the D810 will be updated to equal to or more than 50Mp as well.

The Mp race is finally back on

Interesting to see that it's 36Mp, but that ISO rating will be up to 100K!
D810 only expands up to ISO51200 (that's in Hi2 mode) but natively does ISO12800.

Will be curious to see if they can extract more quality and dynamic range from this sensor. Pentax have been well respected for this capability!

Another thing that will be interesting to watch(and hope) for is if Pentax try to do the same as Olympus has recently done and do a high res mode which shifts the sensor multiple times for a single exposure, which gives not only extra resolution, but also more depth in colour info per pixel.

The Canon loses out on ISO as a result of the 50MP (or so they have stated, I am not sure how bad that is) but I think it would have been difficult to go for something too specialised. I think the 36MP sensor was a smart move for a first full frame camera

The 50Mp Canon will not have a Sony sensor. It's a Canon sensor.

Lots of chat on other forums about the FF Pentax, specifically the KAF3 bit. A KAF3 mount/lens does not have a screw drive.

We will know in time, the full specs.

    Best regards

    ....
It most likely won't, but until someone pulls one apart, no one can or will confirm it either.

Going by price .. the best guess is that it's a Canon unit .. especially as it scales almost perfectly linear when you take into account the 7D's 20mp APS-C sensor.

That is if you turn the 7DII's APS-C sensor into a 135 format sensor(give or take a few mm here or there), you get a 50Mp sensor ... which is what the new 5D is.
So it makes more sense for Canon to simply upscale the 7D's sensor's technology into a high res device.
Whether it's as capable as the Sony based sensors(36Mp where applicable) in terms of SNR and or dynamic range could be an issue(for Canon, not the user/owner of the cameras!).

When new technology comes to market you expect improvements in many areas over the competition.

Expect the new Pentax to better the D800/810 in terms of DXO rated ISO scores!

It's about bl00dy time they released a FF body. Unfortunately, it's 5 years too late as I switched from my beloved Pentax in May 2010 for FF Nikon D700 and their pro spec lenses, best thing I ever did in the end. However I still have a very large soft spot for Pentax, I hope they do well.

Just put down a deposit for a Canon 6D a few days before this was announced, haha.
But in any case, Pentax has basically no good shift lens options and I need the 17mm & 24mm TS-E for my architectural work.

I had been thinking the Sony A7R mightve been a good option in order to keep my FA ltds, but there is (currently) no adapter that supports autofocus for Pentax lenses. Gah!

I have been spoiled by the high quality and lower cost Pentax lenses, this Canon L glass is killing me! :/

    My sentiments as well.

I feel that this new body will be a very mature item, Pentax have seen the teething problems of the others and combined with their excellent build, quality lenses and excellent colour rendition this camera should perform admirably.

36mp seems perfect for the range. 645z has the DR and MP, FF will still have 16mp at Aps-c Crop. Timing wise may actually be perfect with cannon and nikon struggling with over capacity in shrinking and mature market. Good for me and my 43ltd anyway, although my wallet may argue differently!
