Smoke machines - advice, anyone have one?

I'm looking to get a smoke machine to use in some more 'composed' images and wondered whether anyone had used any or had any recommendations for what to look out for in features/brands.
Im guessing a good range of controls like how well it limits the amount of smoke, the speed it leaves and the width of the jet would be starters... Do they all use the same liquid? Can you get colour liquid versions?

Pretty limited range in bricks and mortar shops here in Adelaide, so may have to go online but there's the risk of not having it perform/function ideally!
    Thanks in advance!

Actually would also consider the use of smoke bombs for outdoors if they were legal and where best to seek them.

Why not hire one from a place that provides stuff for concerts, etc? Not sure about Adelaide but here in Hobart we have a few places where you can hire stages, lighting, sound systems, smoke machines etc

Yeah I guess hire could be an option before deciding if I wanted one for regular use.
