    Site Instability at present

    I thought I should post here about the site instability recently. The server has been experiencing some extreme load at times and we have witnesses attempts to hack into the site email addresses. The server has experienced enough load twice now, that it shutdown the site and we have had to reboot the server to get the site up and running. It would appear for all intents and purposes that we are the target of a DDOS hack attack. This is ongoing.

    We have blocked all of China and Russia at the server level.

    Over the past few days members may have found:

    * the site was off-line
    * the site was extremely slow to load
    * threads/posts were failing at creation, or photos posted have doubled up
    * and more

    Whilst we are obviously trying to mitigate all this, whilst the attack on the server continues, we may experience ongoing stability issues in the short term.

    If any member has noticed a specific event/condition occurring repeatedly. Please feel free to let us know in this thread. Specifically if you can tell us more about exactly what occurred etc, it might help us to take further action.

    My apologies for the site instability at present and I thank you all for persevering during what can be frustrating times.

    I just got the site back up after it being down most of the day. I am running database checks on every database on the site. The site could be slow for a while. Also if the DDOS begins again, the site could go down at any time. I hope we can get the site back and stable as soon as possible. Sorry everyone.

    Sorry to hear of the problems Rick - thanks to you and the site management time for keeping us informed and for your collective efforts in maintaining and running the site.

    You might want to consider adding Korea, India, Vietnam, Brazil and Argentina to that list, and maybe Poland.

    That will keep out some of the most active scumbags.

    Thanks for doing a great job to keep the site going, why people try to hack a site like this is beyond me.

    Data..generally the email addresses. what would 20,000+ email addresses be worth to someone who wanted to say sell photography gear?

    Suddenly they have a huge database of emails of people interested in photography, who they can market to, and probably quite effectively. Much easier than randomly emailing thousands of emails hoping that one or two might be interested in a new D810, with a hit rate of less than 1%. Get a good 20,000 photographers emails and you might just sell several D810's

    Update:

    • We made some minor changes to the Apache httpd (Webserver) configuration last night and the site is stable
    • This instability has been a bit baffling as the site was stable under the old configuration
    • We have a load stress tool that throws 100 hits on heavy pages (eg. the main form page, threads with a lot of posts etc.) at a time;
      I ran three lots of that; the site handled 300 concurrent hits without any issue at all

    Historically after China, the USA is the worst offender for hack attempts. As Rick said China (+Russia) have been blocked for some time.

    Yes, but you don't want to block the US. You'd lose your SEO with Google and Yahoo.

    Given our hosting in the US that would be suicide
