I recently bought a new Sony A57 DSLT Camera and have been slowly coming to grips with the new Translucent Mirror technology. I had read quite a lot about DSLT cameras but wanted to wait until I actually had one of my own before passing judgement on it's merits. I've only had the camera a few weeks and have not really been able to REALLY put it through its' paces but I thought that I would share with you my thoughts about it thus far.

There are definite advantages to not having a moving mirror every time you press the shutter, one of which is not being greeted with the "clunk" sound that I have gotten used to on my other cameras. The real advantage, however, is that there is no risk of any vibration adversely affecting the image. Other features include an electronic level so you can keep everything straight where it needs to be as well as a "live" histogram that can be seen in the viewfinder. As far as the histogram goes, it's usefulness extends to being able to determine if your shot will be horribly over or underexposed before you press the shutter. The histogram displayed on the rear screen after a shot is taken gives a much more detailed and accurate picture of how well or badly exposed your shot is. In all, the A57 has all the usual bells and whistles that one would expect on any digital camera of the SLR type and, so far, I haven't encountered any problems with the control and menu layout which is far superior to my other 2 cameras (A200 and A500).

Perhaps the only real down side to this type of camera is the fact that it runs a lot of electronics, including the viewfinder so there is always the potential for something to fry and kill the camera. Other than that, I'm quite happy with it. I thought that the electronic viewfinder would take some getting used to as I had read somewhere that it shows a slightly darker picture than what can be seen through a normal SLR viewfinder but I haven't encountered any problems as yet. I'm waiting for an opportunity to get out with it and give it a good trial so I can see for myself what the camera can really do.

The proof of the pudding, so they say, is in the eating so I've included some images that I've taken with the A57 so you can see for yourself. I think it's safe to say that the jury is still out on mirrorless technology as to whether it has a place in digital cameras. I guess, like any other technological development, time will tell.

Sounds like you've learnt about one of the things that makes rangefinders so great.
It's amazing how low shutter speeds you can use when there's no mirror slapping around!

    Enjoy your new kit!

    You'll enjoy the 60D Adam.
I know I've got something else to say, but it doesn't come to mind at the moment.

Thank you Mary Anne, from the little I've used it so far, it really out performs my old Pentax Kx, can't wait to give it a real workout and see what I can do with it!

The "Whoo! I just got new gear!" thread

A courier delivered my new laptop this morning. Spent all day installing my software and stuff. Asus G75VW. i7 3610QM at 3.3ghz, 16GB RAM, 256gb SSD + 1TB 7200rpm SATA3, GTX 670M 4GB video card, full 1920x1080 HD screen. The thing is a rocket ship. I just timed it, 15sec to boot up, 2sec to open Photoshop!

I got a new card reader. My wife poured a glass of wine on the last one and I've been plugging the camera into the computer for 2 months (which is annoying to say the least). Sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference.
