    Dead D800

I dropped her off at the Doctors today , died on me , no power , tried 3 fully charged batteries , not even giving me a frame count with a battery in it , any ideas what it might be ?

Sorry, it is not a problem I have heard of. From the sounds of it you have done the logical things and when you have zero power showing it isn't easy to do much further diagnosis.

    Hope it is something simple.

I reckon that bloody big hi-tech front end loader you shot the other day has sucked all the juice out of your D800.

That definitely isn't something that anyone wants to hear mate.

Due to the very young age of the camera, max of 3.5 years, or less depending on when you bought yours I think that a friendly non ranting and raving approach to Nikon Aus is in order. Present them with the age of the camera, the shutter count and assurances that it hasn't been physically mistreated and see if they will come to the party with at least a hefty discount on the parts involved.

My preference would be to go down the ranting and raving route, personally!

Considering all the recent negative exposure Nikon has been getting over the D600/D800 debacles, and the fact that a PCB shouldn't have fried itself after only a couple of years(unless the camera has been swimming or something of course!) ... a very ranty-ravey message to Nikon about how badly this will impact on their reputation could only help you.

    Ouch !!!!

    What about your warranty?

When did you buy it? Was it Nikon dealer or Grey?

It was a grey purchase from Digital REV ,I contacted them and they said no go as the camera is out of warranty , 12 months , it's only 17 months old , I didn't get the extended warranty as I guess I have been lucky and have had no problems with any of my previous grey purchases , would Nikon Aust still be worth a try as the camera only has about 2000 shutter count as well and has been treated with kids gloves as I am to quote my other half a-na-l ....LOL

I can't see why Nikon Aus shouldn't fix it .. of course no warranty now just means you'll be about $800 out of pocket.

Can the doctor you've taken it too affect the repair? Is this doc a genuine Nikon repairer .. etc.

I'd say given what the D800 is still worth, $800(while it's a lot of $$$) is still worth the expense.

Maybe in 10 years time, when the D930 is the current model and the D800s are only worth $400 on ebay, you'd question the value of such an expense.
But for now, it's probably worth it.

    Cheers Arthur ,
I'll draft a letter to them (Nikon) tomorrow night , the retailer I took it to in Perth is an Authorised Nikon Retailer/Repairer and has been around for 40 odd years with a good rep .... More to come

Bummer with the warranty, or lack thereof.

I googled 'burnt pcb in nikon d800' and while, thankfully, there was not a lot of hits it did throw up this fleabay link, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Mai...-/290886060919 , "Original Mainboard Motherboard PCB MCU for Nikon Camera D800 Repair Part" for the sum of $US239.99 plus $1.99 shipping from Guangdong, China.

How handy are you with jewelers tools?

LOL! .... that's only a small percentage of the skill required to effect a fix.
99% of the effort in getting the fix right is in remembering how to put everything back together again!
