    Thanks for this. I just need to find a foreground image with stronger edges. Tried a similar method with a greyish tree - dead but lots of branches and failed dismally.

    You can try reprocessing the image in camera raw, play around with white balance, shadows and highlights to maximise contrast between the tree and the sky. The image will look like crap but once you've created the mask just apply it to the original foreground shot.
