    Glass for new 70D

    Hi All

    Just got a new 70D with a 50 1.8 II.

I would like to garner some advice on my next purchase/s. Any suggestions for pet / animal photos.

Looking for something that is flexible but not too expensive ($500). Happy to consider alternative brands.

Also is anyone using the new mini LEDs to supplement / fill. Some are temperature adjustable and I was considering if it is worth spending the extra money.

    Thanks
    Hugh

Hello Hugh. Pets your nifty fifty should be Ok for that.
Animals well that all depends on what Animals you want to shoot at zoos you would need a long angle lens
Had a look on line there is a Tamron and a Sigma both 70-300mm and a Tamron 18-220mm you could shoot landscapes at the wider end.
They are all in your budget so have a look at them. There are also Canon Lenses in that range though different prices.

    Hi Mary Anne
Thanks for the reply, your comments and timing are perfect.
There is a Tamron 18-270 available on Gumtree for a reasonable price which I am giving serious consideration to buying.
    Your assistance is much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Hugh

I would also suggest looking at the Sigma 18-250. Sigma usually available from DCExpert at good price.

If you're chasing pets, make sure you get a lens with stabilisation, especially if you are going to use it at 100+mm focal length, which will be often.
Lenses such as the Tamron you mentioned (and get the VR version) and the Sigma (they call it OS) are reasonable lenses for a one-fits-all type lens, and after you've found what focal lengths you usually use, then you can aim to get something better in your most used focal length.
The less zoom a zoom lens has, the better the picture quality (called IQ or Image Quality) and optical clarity (colour rendition and contrast) it theoretically has, and prime lenses (fixed like your nifty fifty) are top of the tree (theoretically).
    Enjoy your photography!

Hugh I have noticed since I posted that link from eglobal yesterday morning they have changed the price of the Canon Mount.
Yesterday the Canon mount was an extra $10, and now at this present time its and extra $90
May be better to look for your new lens where tduell on reply 5 wrote about.

    Hi tduell and Mary Anne
Thanks for the advice. I have purchased a Sigma through dcxpert.
    Hi bennymiata
Thanks for the advice. I understand your point about a quality prime lens and would love to own a nice one, but unfortunately the bank manager is getting nervous.
Thanks for all the help. I will post some photos when the new lens arrives.
    Cheers
    Hugh
