    Spelling and grammar

Someone recently raised the issue of spelling on the site.
We mods don't usually fix spelling/grammar issues.

There are spelling checkers available in browsers...

The site does auto-fix a very few common issues like lense -> lens (lenses is the plural of lens; the singular does not have an e on the end)

So why not enable spell checking in your browser and make use of it?

if you stuff up the spelling of a threat title etc you can always report the thread, with the reason why, and we will happily fix that. We generally do not correct things unless asked.

Is the issue with regards to the website itself or just members? I mean... nobody is perfect, and when we're making a 'threat' :P, there's bound to be mistakes.

I generally re-read my post (sometimes I forget to), and if I find an error, I'll fix mine up anyways.

Those plug-ins, how reliable are they? I wouldn't want the autocorrect issues the iPhone has, if you know what I mean :P

the auto-correct add-ons for browsers work like spelling correction in M$ word. They give you a squigly red under-line and you can right click and correct the spelling. They are not like phone auto-correct

    Oh, that's good then. lol

But don't most browsers have that built in already? My Firefox does it, and I think it also depends on the website if it's been enabled or not on the user control panel right?

Because some forums I go to don't get the red squiggle, whilst others, like here, do.

Firefox definitely has it if the page supports it, in the Advanced tab, "Check my spelling as I type"

PS, re the issue being website or members, for me it is neither. People cannot spell or make typo's all the time. I can usually work out what they are trying to say and I ignore it. So many people have English as a second or third language these days, so they do make mistakes, it happens. Not really something I concern myself with, on a website. In a job application maybe, but on a website, nup!

Firefox does have one built in, but it's usually American spelling.

I use this Australian spelling plugin with Firefox. It doesn't need anything additional like the test tools.

One thing to watch out for is that Firefox will often set the default spelling dictionary back to the USA one. It's a long outstanding bug.

Agreed - my main pet peeve are the grammar nazis, they need to chillax. I only did it for fun in forums when there was a section pretty much it's just all about random things like that.

Yeah, I just change the Z's to S and add a few U's to some words :P

Either way, the plugins look good - will have to give them a shot some time

I may have to start using Urban Dictionary to start understanding what you're saying.

    Cast a spell.
If you can't cast a spell, cast nasturtiums.

We won't become spelling and grammar nazis; but as a member brought up this issue we thought we would start a discussion and make people aware of the tools available.

Thanks for the explanation and links. I had a mental blank on one word the other day and tried spelling it every which way except the correct one. cheers Brian
