Like Waz said, LR has it's own loaded codec software to read and display raw files.

There is a small problem tho.
If you have a camera MORE modern than the last version of LR4, you can't update ACR(built into LR) to recognize the newest camera model.

I think LR4.4(last version of 4) only recognizes Nikon raw files up to and including D7100. Any camera after this release may not be supported(eg. D610, D3300, D5300, Df, D4s, and so on).

So for example, if you have a D5300 or D4s or something really new, LR4 will not recognize the raw files from those cameras .. but it still recognizes any earlier camera raw files you may have(eg. D5000 or whatever).

To get LR to recognize the latest/newest camera raw files, you will need to update to the latest version of LR, which is currently 5(and a bit, I think).

I've searched for some way to update ACR in LR to recognize later camera models, but found nothing.

Nikon's raw codecs(which I posted links too in your other thread) don't work for LR.
These codecs only work for Windows, or any software reliant on Windows to render the raw file .. eg. Office programs.

Strangely, even Nikon's own software can be reliant on these new codecs too, eg. some of their older software.
But the latest version of Nikon's software always recognizes their newest raw files.

Yep. LR5.3 at the time of posting. I also have PSE9 and can't update Camera Raw beyond what that will recognise either.

    I'm guessing ROA44's problem is the 32-bit/64-bit nexus. LR5 is purely 64-bit while LR4 has a 32-bit version. I can't run LR5 on my old laptop (32-bit) but I can run LR4.
