what to see and do

myself and the wife are having a few weeks holiday and leaving next Saturday, we are heading to Canberra, and then onto Brisbane , before heading to Sydney on the way home
after some ideas and sights and places of interest on our travels

Canberra has Australia's must see War Memorial (which I believe is the best in the world. Then off course Parliament House and Lake Burley Griffin. Between Canberra and Sydney, if you sorta sidestep a bit towards Katoomba, you will find The Three Sisters which is in the Blue Mountains. In Sydney a ferry trip to Manly Beach is a must and off course the Sydney Opera House, Darling Harbour and Sydney Harbour Bridge would keep you busy. Don't know about Brisbane, but Ask Google who seems to know all. Enjoy your trip. You will love both Sydney and Canberra.

Come up to Brissy via the New England Hwy. Every town on the way is a photographers dream, as well as stops for scenery on the way.

In the Brisbane CBD there are plenty of interesting buildings near the river. There's also the Kangaroo Point cliffs and Southbank Parklands both for themselves and the views of the CBD. The Botanic Gardens and Roma Street Parklands are also worth a look. The gardens at the base of Mt Coottha and the lookout at the top - depends on how far out of the CBD you can go?

It's a bit off the main roads , but I can show you a day of views, and share an evening meal, if you're silly enough to pass through.

Depends on the way you go. If you go up, say, via Canberra and then do the coast thru Sydney and on to Bris, you might come back via inland routes.
That'd give you quite a swathe of wide-brown-land to traverse, and the distances would not be too different. Yes, take Mark up on his offer
and surprise him. And as a theme song you could have "On the Road Again" - and again, and again, and so on...

i might take you up on the offer of a drop in for a coffee mark on the way up there, it looks as if we are going to Canberra first and then heading to Brisbane, and doing the coastal road on the way back and stopping at Sydney for a couple of days, i will give you a pm in the next couple of days mark
am i do not want to hear that song ever again , we used to do a lot of travelling as kids and dad thought he could sing

Tamborine mtn and surrounds such as Binna Burra and O'Reilies offer great walks for the nature side of things, like waterfalls, birds and rainforest settings.

Might be a bit late on this Macca...

Sydney...

Circular Quay is a good starting point, generally easy to get to by public transport...

• as Luwii already mentioned, Opera House and Bridge. There is the bridge climb if you don't mind heights (but you can't take your camera)...
• plenty of eateries / bars around the Quay if you need to while away some time while waiting to get that dusk shot of the Bridge
• just behind and east of the Opera House are the Botanic Gardens. (Off the southern side of the Gardens is the Art Gallery of NSW)
• on the west side of the Quay is the Museum of Contemporary Art
• just up behind that is the historic "Rocks" area. Lots of old buildings, plenty more eateries, some good old pubs. (If a nice day and you feel the need for a 'coldie', try the roof of the Glenmore in Cumberland St). Street markets on the weekend (I think).
• just over the western side of the Bridge approach is the historic Sydney Observatory

From Circular Quay there are plenty of options to get out on the harbour...

• as Luwii mentioned, ferry to Manly
• it's a short ferry ride across to Taronga Zoo. As well as the usual animal photo ops there are great views across the harbour back toward the city (including the 'compulsory' shots of the giraffes or mountain goats with the CBD in the background )
• another short ferry ride to Cockatoo Island. A mix of colonial/convict buildings as well as industrial relics from the relatively more recent ship-building era. Also views up and down the harbour.
• ferry to Watson's Bay. You can take a walk around the headland taking in Hornby lighthouse as well as the Sydney-sider's preferred suicide spot - the Gap. Or have a feed at Sydney 'institution' Doyle's, or (more economically) grab some fish and chips from their takeaway and eat it on the beach. Or you could while away some time in the pub while waiting to get that sunset shot up the harbour back towards the city. (I think I see a theme developing here ). From memory the ferry service is a bit sparse, but there is also a (somewhat longish) bus service back to the city.
• Rivercat to Parramatta. (Never done this one so not sure what to see...)

There are a variety of walks around the harbour and on the coast. If interested, google should turn up some info for you.

Darling Harbour on the western edge of the CBD...

• Aquarium
• National Maritime Museum
• Chinese Gardens
• King St Wharf (on the CBD side) has many good restaurants / bars
• a few blocks west of Darling Harbour in Pyrmont is Star City Casino

There are a number of national parks around Sydney. Again google should turn up plenty of info if interested. (I believe that the Royal National Park south of Sydney is the preferred hunting ground of the rarely seen mongo ).

If you are interested in something more 'urban', Newtown is a short train / bus ride from the City. It has an eclectic mix of shops, cafes and restaurants (and inhabitants ), and is probably the prime location for street art in Sydney.

Finally, if you are interested in meeting up with some fellow AP'ers, NikonNellie is organising a meetup in the next few weeks which might coincide with your visit. It's to be at Bradleys Head which is not far from the Zoo.

I'd suggest googling on anything from above that you might be considering - it's been a while since I've been to some of those places so they might all be Starbucks now . If you are looking for public transport info http://www.transportnsw.info/ does a reasonable job of putting it together.
