You can get cheaper versions(than Kenkos) off ebay with this electronic ability .. just be sure to stay away from the full manual(and hence cheapest) types which will not work with your current lenses.

HERE's one example of the extension tubes you should be looking for.

I have no experience with these accessories, so cannot vouch for them. I use the link for info purposes only.

I have been using "Kenko" extension tubes with my Nikon mount lenses for 3 years and can vouch for their quality and ease of use.

    Just one question about them.
Do they correct for aperture value based on extension used?

That is, as you add more extension, your effective aperture changes from that set on the lens. Do they somehow change this info and relay it back to the camera?

I've been thinking of getting some myself too. I only have a few old Nikon manual tubes.

Extension Tubes + old manual focus lens ...

A manual focus 50mm Lens and some tubes will give you good results ... And the more interested you become , the more dedicated Macro system can be developed ..
If you want a dedicated Macro Lens = Look at the Tamron 90mm 1:1 F2.8

    Arthur,
I experimented with my extension tubes and lenses today and got some interesting results but I'm not sure if I can answer your question adequately.

With zoom lenses that had variable minimum f stops (eg: f3.5 to f6.3) the camera changed the F stop reading accurately as the lens was zoomed and exposures were accurate.
    For example:
    With Sigma 18-200mm f3.5 - 6.3 the f stop changed from f3.5 at 18mm to f6.3 at 200mm with the 12mm, 20mm or 36mm extension tube attached.

    Now for the interesting outcome:
With a combination of Nikon D7000, AF Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 D lens and Kenko extension tube (12mm, 20mm or 36mm) I had the following results.

The lens worked accurately at all apertures from f2.3 to f22 with all extension tubes in auto and manual exposure modes.
    Now for the good bit.
Without or with the 20mm or 36mm extension tube attached the camera would report a fault if I switched the "Lens Aperture Lock " off and tried to set manual apertures. This is a normal outcome. BUT With the 12mm extension tube attached the camera didn't report a fault and with the camera set in manual mode I got accurate exposures as I changed the apertures manually on the lens. Following is a table showing Lens Aperture setting vs Camera Display aperture reading:

    Lens setting Camera display
    f 2.8 f 4
    f 4 f 5.6
    f 5.6 f 8
    f 8 f 11
    f 11 f 16
    f 16 f 22
    f 22 f 32

I hope the above information helps.
