    amazing machines. One features in the movie Hugo!

    Leonardo made at least two in the 1500's, one was presented to King Louis XII. Cuckoo clocks use the same principles. Interestingly if one of these was made today we would tend to call it a Robot. Automaton was the word used for centuries to describe these machines, right up until the 1920's when Robot became popular.
