Life is like a camera, focus on what's important, capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don't work out take another shot
300mm should be ok so maybe the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG Macro (don't get the non APO version, its not as good) as a budget option

What lenses do you have already?
Are you prepared to buy second-hand?
+1 to MarkL - what are you currently using and maybe more importantly, what is your budget and how much is it growing by? If you can wait 6 months and get a great lens why buy now for a lower quality?
Hi Mark, at the moment I have a 70-200 f4 which is a great lens but just doesnt have the reach I want. I also have others but they are mostly portrait lenses. I hadnt really thought about second had but I would consider it

Fess I think I can go to about $1500, the swim club has asked if I can do their swim meets and the spring/summer season is just now getting under way.
Kym thanks for the link will check those out
Go at least a 300mm and that is my next lens or maybe a 500mm if I can afford it. Also make sure you get a monopole too.

I assume you are using the 5DII?
The 70-200 is very good. A 70-300L or 100-400 will lose a stop of light at the long end. The other option if using it indoors is second hand 70-200 2.8 then add a 1.4 TC for use outdoors.
What about a 7D? Superior AF and the crop factor of 1.6 will get the 70-200 F4 to approximately the same FL as the 70-300L. You could then add a 1.4TC at the expense of a little bit of AF speed.
