Tall Ships Hobart 20-25 September 2013

I am arriving to live down here just in time (we arrive Sept 15) for The Tall Ships Festival, happening from 20-25 September this year. Website and the Wooden Boat website section with the full program.

"The five-day Tall Ships program will include ship tours, special sailings, exhibitions and activities in Princes Wharf One, entertainment, a Grand Parade, fine Tasmanian food and wines, a special schools program and much more. Coming as it does just before the International Fleet Review in Sydney, you will get the chance to see these great ships first in Hobart’s beautiful Sullivans Cove."

Anyone like to come along to a couple of meetups?

I was thinking one could be on the 20th when they sail up the Derwent "Tall ships will be arriving from different ports and directions, so you may see them coming up the River Derwent at varying times during the day and evening."; and there could be a couple through the week - the weekend appears to be the best activity with pipe bands etc; and on the 25th they depart "Best vantage points: Bellerive Bluff, Alexandra Battery, Wrest Point Casino, Sandy Bay, Mount Nelson Signal Station.".

    Anyone?

I could be interested, though during sept and oct my work commitments will be larger than usual, and I work around 50 hours a week now. I usually do not work Friday, but may have to during this time. so I cannot commit 100% until probably close to the day.

It's a few weeks to go - I posted it now so people had time to plan. I hope for good shots for the 20th (the Friday) but of course it depends on the timing of the arrivals and the weather.

Yeah, I am not going to be able to plan as such. During Sept and Oct i have to work whatever is needed of me, so could be working 7 days a week, with little notice (ie I might find out one day that I have to work 14 hours the next day, etc). So I won't be able to commit till the last minute..sorry.

    Hi Odille,

Welcome - in advance - to Tas!

I'm helping organise the photography for the Tall Ships. Another couple local guys and I also did similar for the Wooden Boats and ANZAC Day. IANAM (I am not a member), but doing this through the Hobart Photographic Society so we get a significant number of people volunteering, and develop skills of that club.

Basically, for these three events we've organised around 15 people plus ourselves, to volunteer to do the photography for the events. The photographers retain copyright, but the organisation can also use them (with agreement, attribution, ...). The big advantage is that for the Tall Ships, volunteers get free access to the ships, while the general public has to pay. We're organising things at the moment, including a practice photojournalism session on 31/8 too.

First step is to volunteer on the AWBF/TS web site, and you can specify days/sessions you're available for.

If you're interested let me know and we can arrange more.

Oh, and I'll be there all 6 days rather than just occasional meetups

Scott, I'd definitely be interested, for all the events, not just this one. But bear in mind I don't land in Tassie until 15 Sept, so there may not be enough lead in time. Let me know, I have email me enabled on my profile.

I'm going to Sandy Bay today so hopefully I can get a few reasonable photos of the Tall Ships leaving Hobart.
