The Ausphotography homepage : Changes ??

On the site homepage, we have as a focal point (pun intended) the recent competitions winners images.

The mods and I have had a discussion about changing that. We would like to retain the current Photo of the Year, the current photo of the month, and now only the current photo of the week winners. We would then like to fill the extra spaces with a random selection of member photos, which would change regularly.

We are aware that some members enter our competitions all the time, but have never won, and that others do not enter the competitions but present some great photography in the forums. So we would like to start randomly adding member photos to the site home page. Thus we would remove the current situation where we often have several weeks photo of the week winners on display at any one time, and it would simply be just the current photo of the week winners with a random selection of member photos.

We would like your thoughts on this change, before/if we implement it. So please have your say in this thread

Are the images copyrighted, and if so would they be seen without logging in?

Yes, images would be seen, but the front pages images are reduced to 300px high before display.

As time goes by we see the comp winners anyway. Reckon the homepage is viewed by people checking AP out, so a variety of images (other than comps) may help people relate to something new.
Might encourage some new to photography to join up, if sometimes, not the best photos are presented!!!

Yep, that was my thoughts too. We could post some that have been given really good CC in the forums, that the member has taken on board, with messages like 'learn how to improve your photography' etc. We could also encourage people to get out in their area with a photo and comment like 'see what the gold coast looked like recently at sunrise! Get up early and capture your own sunrise'

At present, it looks like most are in favour of the idea, so we will start off with some changes this coming Sunday, as the photo of the week is announced.

Yes they would, but so are the images on the homepage now. But only active site members could access the CC forum where these new images will come from. My intention is to have each photo click enabled so people can click through to the thread they came from. But this would only work for people who are firstly members of the site, and secondly, active members. Anyone else will get a 'you do not have permission to view this page' message.

Hi All, I am in favor of this idea because there are simply so many good photos put up on this forum and not everyone gets to see them. Many times I have hit the wall and scratch my head on what to try next, Sure the competitions push you a little to think more creatively but there are so many examples of different things to try. for example forced perspectives, architecture, astro to name a few there are great photos of off beat genres that we may well be unaware of in which case it might give us the opportunity to grow our portfolios and skill sets.

    Kind Regards
    Livio

Hi Rick, The only comment I have regards the home page and that section in particular is for the images to displayed in a static frame of some sort. As it currently is a very distracting/confrontational system as the images change. Verges on epilepsy.

We can slow down or speed up the time that each image is displayed. At present I think I have it set to 3 seconds but I can go as fast as 1 second or as slow as 30 seconds. So when I do the change on Sunday, I will slow it down a bit.

EDIT: have changed it to 5 seconds

my comment was more in relation to the transition between images, but thanks for reviewing.

OK so rather than the speed you dislike the instant move from one image to the other and would like a more fade in/fade out, or differing transition effects, as such?
