Distance indicator not working on Canon 600EX-RT - help needed!

Hi all

I'm a newb here and am hoping the community may be able to assist me.

I've purchased a Canon 600EX-RT speedlite flash and wish to use it in M mode, but the distance indicator doesn't seem to be working. I've tried Googling for troubleshooting ideas, but can't see anything. Has anyone experienced the same issue or now what the fix is?

Page 31 of the manual for the 600EX-RT - when you depress the shutter 1/2 way should give you distance..

btw took me 2 mins reading the manual... and 2 minutes to check it....
