The 2013 Photo of the Week : News

The mods and I have been working on the Photo of the week themes for 2013. We have come up with something different this year.

We will be holding several 'mini-series' competitions. We have a range of ideas that will allow members to explore a theme over several weeks, each week having a different sub-theme but all bound to the overall 'mini-series' theme.

To give you an example of what we have in store for you as photo of the week competition themes. One of the 'mini-series' is possibly going to be 'The suit series'. So under this series would be four weekly competitions titled : Clubs, Hearts, Spades, Diamonds. Each week over a four week period of the 'mini-series' the theme would be one of the four suits, but we may not allow any entry to be an actual playing card.

These 'mini-series' themes are still being finalised, but you might see things like a geometric series, a symbols series, etc.

We hope to be able to give you more details of some of the series shortly. We may list the series titles, give you some of the weekly themes, but we might also hold back on a few.

We are also working on some ideas for competitions where the entry must be taken after the theme is announced. We also have a big portrait competition being planned with some great prizes on offer for that one. For some fun we are planning a political one around the time of the Federal Election.

So there you go, a few hints on what we have in store for you for Photo of the Week during 2013. Looking forward to managing these comps and seeing your entries throughout the year.

sounds interesting and a little variation from the same old is a good thing.

Funny you should mention something like this. Mongo was only thinking last week about suggesting a different approach now and then. This all arose out of the need to choose a single entry to a weekly comp. Mongo thought - why should one image be the deciding entry for what we may be capable of in any particular comp topic ? That is, in specific topic comps (now and then) it might not be a bad idea if the entrants are invited to submit their best , say, 2 or 3 images to be judged with the aggregate score for all one's entries submitted being their final marks. Mongo understands their may be logistical and technical issues that may make this difficult but he feels it would be difficult to argue that this system would not be a better test of our overall abilities in that topic than a single one off hit or miss entry.

Just some food for thought while we are thinking outside the box.

Speaking of food, it has been at least four and a half minutes since Mongo stole someone's play lunch...got to go - duty calls !

Technically possible Mongo, but would require writing some more code to do so, which may or may not prove to be worthwhile on the whole. We have the ability now to allow members to enter more than one entry per competition. We can just type a number into a field when creating the comp, so we can allow 2..3. 10 entries per member if we want to.

These mini-series competitions will be interspersed with open (non themed) theme competitions as well.
