I'm trialling a used Nikon D700. How can I disable or change the file numbers so the numbers don't interfere with those of my D300. It must be fairly easy but I can't see it. How do you manage more than 1 camera?

Go to your menu > Shooting Menu ( camera icon ) > set Active Folder to what ever suits you and is different between bodies > below active folder there is the File Naming option, set that differently on each body.
Works here fine with 6 bodies.
AndrewNikon, Fuji, Nikkor, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina and too many other bits and pieces to list.
