A Nice D700

Recently have gotten a used D700 and its still on the original firmware.
The question is o I go to the next in order firmware or just skip it and go
to the latest firmware dated may 2012?

I am quite sure that the latest firmware includes all other firmwares that preceded it.

Is it simply a case of a formatted Cf card and d/l to card insert and follow instruction, lance ?

Yes you can just go to the latest firmware versions. And yes formatting the card and copying the files to it, and putting the card in your camera is basically it. BUT read the step-by-step instructions on the firmware download site..and follow them.

Go straight to http://nikonasia-en.custhelp.com/app...tail/a_id/7478 download the firmware and install it as per the directions on the page.

've checked the firmware A Ver. 1.03 and B firmware to Ver. 1.02

I don't understand why you want to open the bin file?

Do you have a file downloaded called S700_103.bin?

EDIT:
I've just downloaded a firmware file, and it seems that they're now using self extracting executables(I can't remember this last time I updated a firmware).

You can either manually extract the bin file from their self extracting file(the file you downloaded) or just execute the file itself, which should extract the firmware bin file to a certain folder on your computer.

If the self extractor file isn't working, then just righclick it, and select open archive, or whatever options you have there.

Once extracted you will get a folder called <cameraname>Update, with the firmware file in there.

All you need to look for is this firmware .bin file and get it onto the CF card.

If this isn't working for ya, maybe the download got corrupted.

Thanks arthurking85, it seems whatever I did, when it came to uploading into the camera it would not give me an option to update the firmware, it just said done. Now I have bent a pin in the card reader so I had to admit defeat.

As for the firmware update... did you load the .bin file onto the CF card?

As I remember it (admittedly many years back) it simply does it's thing for a moment and then maybe it asks you you are sure you want to update the firmware .. or something along those lines.

You don't manually need to update the firmware. The camera has a routine that is set to look for a firmware update if the .bin file is present on the memory card.
I suppose that if the .bin file is newer than the firmware on the camera, it then asks if you want to update it .. with a warning message too.
It won't automatically update, just in case the battery is low or something.

I loaded the .bin file onto the CF card but when I inserted in the camera it didn't give me an option to update, it just had A 1.02 B1.02 done. Nothing about updating. I remember reading an instruction saying load the file into the root part of the CF file, not sure what that meant but maybe that is the problem. It seems that the d700 isn't seeing the update on the CF card. I will make another attempt when I get a new card reader, thanks Arthur.

When they say "onto the root of the CF card" .. that simply means that you need to have the .bin file straight onto the card, and not in another folder on the card(ie. a directory or sub directory).

So if you click the CF cad on a file explorer program, you may see on the card a Nikon made folder(possibly called DCIM), another file which may be a camera config file(called NIKON001.DSC) and if your firmware file the xxx.bin file.
That means all those files and folders are on the root of the CF card.
Any file or folder located inside the folder called DCIM, is in a subdirectory.
If the .bin file is located in a folder, then the camera won't recognize it.
