Pets can kill too.. Not just dangerous breeds

On Sunday night 2 "pets" got into my backyard and killed my little jack Russell "Cleo".. One a lab, and the other a malamute mix.. It was the lab that killed her, luckily my Ridgeback got the malamute or it would of killed my other Jack Russell .. We need tougher laws in this country re: responsible pet ownership!! We fence pools to make them safe, why are we allowed to keep pets that can roam free? I have a remote fence so mine cannot get out, it cost me $193 and works perfectly.. It should be law to ensure your property is adequately secure if you are to keep dogs. I now have lost one of my little mates, have a little JR with a puncture to her chest and a Ridgeback with several punctures to his legs and neck.. Because people are irresponsible Below is my kids, little Cleo is the one in the middle..

Oh wow, I am so sorry to hear this, but how brave was your Ridgy, saving the other little guy. I guess we won't hear too much about this shocking incident, because the dogs involved arent so called "dangerous" breeds, but it does show that breed is not the only factor.

I feel your pain.

I have a Staffy, and with people she knows, she is a loveable sook. I love her to bits and she is extremely protective of me.

With other dogs her first instinct is to play, but if they growl, or show any aggression, she goes bananas.

She is NEVER out of my secure yard unless on a leash.

It is a responsibility to have a pet, and those that can harm people, or other animals, should always be controlled.

Irresponsible people who let their animals roam at will should be dealt with by the law.

We had a stray dog come onto our property last week and eat our chickens. When I came home, I saw this young, malnourished black kelpie pup on my back doorstep. I chained it up, fed and watered it (we have two dogs that are fenced in the back yard area). Owner came and got it while I was out picking up my kids (away 10 mins) - no note or anything. Found our eaten chickens an hour later.

Mate I'm so sorry to hear about this tragedy, You have my deepest sympathy and I'm sending healing thoughts.
I can actually relate to your hurt as this exact thing happened to good friend just a few years ago .... Nothing ever came from it and the dogs were quickly relocated by their low life owners.
Unfortunatly its not the dogs fault, dangerous or otherwise ..... Its irresponsible owners that cause these dreadful events. I own a dog that would be considered dangerous and he is a well behaved sook. We took time to train him and socialise him, we also keep our dogs contained, it dosn't take much.

Like cargo I have had Dangerous dogs and still do, (although mine is a x breed) I socialize him with other dogs and people when ever I can and he is a big sooky baby, Its the hero's that think their dogs are tough and without realizing what they are doing in there training they turn the dog into a time bomb.

Thank you Zollo.. I have a containment fence which runs around the perimeter of the yard (my dogs wear collars that alert them to the proximity of the fence, if they get too close they get a beeping sound, if they continue to get closer they get a vibration) Alot of flags and training to get them used to the system. My house is fully fenced as well with pool fencing like zincalume. One of my dogs used to get out and find me at work, which is fine, except that I work in the mines! Which is why I invested in the containment fence. Unfortunately it does not keep other dogs out.. The neighbours said the dogs that killed her just jumped the gate!! which is a normal farm gate.

Iggi is also considered "Dangerous" (crossed with a bull arab) He is a fierce protector of the house and car, but when confronted with a snappy angry little dog he sits on them!! but he is well behaved with alot of time and effort gone into his behaviour.. He will bark at the door, then put his head in their lap for a cuddle once inside. There is alot of energy required for any dog to be well balanced, not just the large & "Dangerous" breeds.. If people aren't prepared to put the time in, then a dog is not for them.. Regardless of its size.. I agree with you when you say "heroes" mentality.. So true..

So sorry to hear of your loss. We had our small dog attacked on a public dog beach by a staffie mix and he was lucky to survive - punctured neck which blew up like a balloon with internal bleeding. The owner of the staffie said "sorry about that, he doesn't usually get that aggressive"...

I think the feeling of failure is overwhelming!! I failed to keep them safe!! It was my job.. I cannot imagine the pain she suffered... I have been told it was a blessing that I did not see it, as I probably would of been attacked as well.. It does not make me feel any better...

Yes, we got lucky, Enzo is fine. He spent a day at a vet's and incurred $1000+ in bills, but once they drained the haemotoma he was ok. We decided to get pet insurance that day, so that cost would never influence our decision should Enzo require treatment.

Please don't blame yourself over Cleo. Hard enough coping with your loss, never mind absorbing blame that is absolutely not yours.

I am so sad for you and your family and dogs that this has happened - a very traumatic and terrible situation. There are a lot of irresponsible pet owners and usually minimal to no consequences for the owner when bad things happen. Do not feel responsible for this happening when the blame lies elsewhere. Absolutely gut wrenching, I feel your pain...

I am bloody sick of irresponsible pet owners that let their animals roam free. I live on a lake, and my neighbours have a cat that is never kept indoors. In the past two months it has killed a water dragon that lived in my garden (has frequented my garden for about 6 years.. it was a huge and incredibly tame lizard..) , several ducklings and the mother duck. If I ever see the cat in my property, I will do one of two things: catch it and take it to the pound, or two 'deal' with it in other ways (maybe it's time I get back into shooting? ) . I love all animals, including cats, but far out, not when they kill innocent wildlife I have grown to know over the years.

Get the police involved and have the animal that killed your dog destroyed. Admittedly, it's not the dog's fault (or in my situation the cat), but the owner's. Still, lessons will be learned.

Loosing your best friend is never going to be easy. My heart goes out to all who have had to experience the heat wrenching pain associated with any of your family being hurt in any way.

I once had to patch up my dog after she jumped out the window of our car on the first day of a 12 day driving holiday. Thankfully we were going under 60 and she bounced clear of the trailer we were towing, but that doesnt' make any difference as you look in the rear view to see your best mate bouncing down the highway. Luckily she only got a few good scrapes and bruises. Apart from being shaken, she was otherwise ok.

Being a Staffy owner, (a supposedly dangerous breed Pfft) I can honestly say it all comes back to the owner and their training. I can stop my dog from doing anything with a single word regardless of what she's doing at the time. Poor thing got her ass kicked at the dog park a couple of times because I broke her off a fight with a word, she turned her back and got pummeled. For the record, the other dogs started the fight by trying to steal take her toy, and got pissed off when she wouldn't give it to them.

I truly agree. Training should be mandatory for all pet owners, especially if they are large or potentially dangerous breeds. (funnily enough the most dangerous breed I've come across are chiuawas nastly little buggers they are.) Train the trainers. It's not difficult to teach a dog. They're the same as kids. They absorb your behaviour.

So sorry to hear you have lost your little girl, RIP Chloe. It is owners that should be dealt with, not the dogs. People are so irresponsible with opets. My 6 cats are insdie with their cattery and netted verandah, so they cause no grief to anyone. yet we consistently get neighbours dogs and occasionally cats in our front yard (not fenced, it is small). There is one dog that growls and bares its teeth at us, I hate to think what it would do to the cats if they were out. Do you have any idea who owns the ofenders - perhpas you could report them?

Do you want to here a funny story! Ok then... My dad tells me of a time when I was around 4 years old when I set his blue heeler onto the posty on his pushy I cant remember but Dad said it was funny watching the dog hanging off his pants.
I was a little turd actually, I can remember about the same time telling my school friends to stick their fingers in Dads ferret cage

You sounded like a turd too Dave!! Iggi is ridiculously friendly.. My 2 new cats have him wrapped around their little paws, it is funny to watch him lay down so they can attack his face!! People overlook the little snappy dogs, but all dogs can be lethal in the wrong hands..
