I ended up getting the E from Ted's in Elizabeth st, I checked their website last night and the price had dropped to $3419. I bought a disposable camera from them for $20 and used that for the trade in to get another $300 off. Also got the 14-24 f2.8 and MB-D12 grip.

I was planning to do the rounds of all the elizabeth st stores but ended up working late last night and didn't get much sleep, so the first place with stock and a decent price was good enough for me.

I took a few test shots and the IQ is extremely good. Now i'm just waiting on the SW150 filter system to arrive.

I have the D800 and the 14-24 f2.8 and also the 16-35 f4 VR and I also have the Lee filter system for both lenses. For the SW150 that goes with the 14-24 f2.8, I purchased the "SW150 Kit", which comes with a 2 stop hard ND grad, the filter holder, the mount for the lens, a neoprene lens cover (for when you have the filter mounted on the lens) and a set of "Blinkers". The "Blinkers" are very useful as you can get extraneous light entering between the lens and filter causing issues. I forgot my blinkers once and I did have issues of light entering from the rear! The "Blinkers" are attached behind the filter to stop extraneous light entering from the rear of the filter, between the filter and lens. The mount for the lens is beautifully made.
I am thinking of getting a 3 stop hard ND grad and also the Lee Big Stopper at some stage for those long exposure shots. However, I have not found that I would ever need more than the 3 stop ND grads for sky/land differences and I have never found the need for more than the one filter slot.
I purchased them from the Australian agent, http://www.mediavision.com.au/ who are in Gladesville Sydney.

As for getting the D800E over the D800. From what I have read and seen, and these are opinions from people who use both cameras, is that there is little difference between the D800 and D800E especially if you do judicious post processing. The people who have used both, generally professionals who obviously need more than one camera, and have reported their findings on certain forums is that you can achieve basically the same results from both cameras.

I've ordered the kit that includes the 0.6 hard, also ordered 0.6 soft, 0.9 hard and 0.9 standard nd from mediavision, the kit wont arrive until early december so I'll have to shoot lanscapes with the D7000 for a few more weeks

Lee don't make anything stronger than 0.9 for the SW150 kit, but hitech make everything up to a 10 stop in the same 150mm size. I think to use a 10 stop you'd need to seal around the sides of the holder using foam or something attached to the blinkers. I've had light get in behind the big stopper on the 100mm kit and ruin the image, only happened once when shooting at 90degrees to the sun.

Yes you can take photos without them, but as the dynamic range of the D800/e is around 14 stops, and the human eye is estimated to be around 25 stops, there is still a long way to go before things like graduated filters may not be needed by the photographer.

The 14-24 has the added issue of needing the specialised holder due to its bulbous front element. Which makes it a rather costly exercise to get filters for it. But the fact that Lee etc have done the work to create these filters means that even they believe there is a decent market for them.

So I complete disagree with your view on the D800 not needing filters.

I completely agree with what Zollo said, nicely worded...
You can, simply exposure blend if you need to.

Also Lance, I agree too. I have seen plenty of people say the 800e is better in their opinion but also say, its hard to actually show the difference, so its obviously of very little significance otherwise the net would be full of brick wall photos from everyone keen to prove it .

Just got my D800e and battery pack from eGlobal within 3 days of ordering

Have only taken a few pics (portraits) so far but am heading to Darwin at Easter for a friends wedding and short break so hope to give it an outing

Have been using Nikon Digital since they first introduced them and owned just about all models up to D3s one thing immediately apparent to me upon uploading some images is that the images straight out of camera are sharp, well exposed and have an amazing dynamic range

The images have a luscious deep gorgeous (struggling for the words here) colour and ''Velvia'' look about them the Raw images i have processed have needed no sharpening and very little if no levels adjustment , i am very impressed so far but i have this nagging little voice in my head saying ''take your time and learn this camera's functions''

Whichever way one looks at it this camera is an amazing step forward in photographic technology at a very affordable price , together with the D7100 which i reckon i will also add to the arsenal we are so well served at the moment thank you Mr Nikon

Will post some images when i return home late next week

    Cheers
    Norman
