A difficult decision

I am in two worlds as I am trapped between the new boy D600 and the performer D700.
While the techno wars says that the D600 has the goods in many areas the D700 is to me a
natural upgrade from the D300/300s.I have same battery and grip and the familiarization to the
controls on the D300/300s.But the secondhand evilbay justs inflates the price when I reach my limit
and for a few more coin I can have the D600. *removed - read the site rules: rule # 23*
Or can some one point to me a decent site besides the one here as I have search

Camera's change, the same as cars, computers, phones. If we all stuck to what we know, we would be shooting with glass plates.

Both the D700 and D600 are brilliant bits of kit, but this is really something you need to decide.

Buy the D600 - just my humble opinion! Why? Cause I got used to the changed controls etc on my D800 fairly quickly and the D600 is current tech, the D700 isn't.

ebay is all over the show at the moment on used D700s..ive seen some go for as little as $1275 lightly used and other mingers go for over $2000...depends on the day at moment.

as for which one....the other day I wanted Video..its only happened the once and its the only time I felt the D700 lacking...

are you keeping the D300 for the DX reach...if so go for a D700..if not perhaps a new broom might be best ...but your dilemma is one we all deal with for sure ...Id love a D800...but I cant justify the added cost at present , ill get one day...but I do love the D700 for sure..just wish Id had kept the D300s as well

If thinking about a locally sourced D600, from the price I saw walking around a large Au retailer in Sydney, you could spend a few $ more and get an imported D800...but an imported D600 is only about $1800-1900

I think if you have the D300/s and are looking at your first FX body, you need to decide what your spend is going to be. As Steve said, you can source a used D700 in exc condition, particularly from the USA for as little as $1200 (several for sale right now) compared to the $1000 more it could cost for the AU retail stock of the D600. If you have to pay $1500 for a D700, simply get the D600 being higher res, great ISO and with full HD video.

I sold my D700 with genuine grip and L-plate shortly after I got the D800, and I got US$2325 for it, I paid SG equivalent of AU$2900 for the D800, so I was pretty happy with that changeover cost.

If I can find a decent D700 for the right price that's the ticket
only because its familiar to the 300/300s and I have 2 grip and batteries that are
interchangeable but if only I have the patience to wait if not the new year will see a D600
On the subject of the 700 why is it soo many example of 3-4 y.o have issues with rubber giving way and peeling?

The D700 was a workhorse for many including busy pro's, and many will have pretty high shutter counts, thus use and the rubber wears. If cared for, they are very durable, but in any case rubber replacement is pretty cheap.

One that was for sale did mention the cost to replace the rubber,in the order of $190 this was quoted for a seller on evilbay

I sold mine on ebay for 1800 and got a d800 for an extra K.
TBH, the d800 is great, but I think the d600 is probably a damn fine choice as well.
I think for the average person the PC power needed for the d800 raw files might come as a shock

Puts me off when O/S new D700 ( Some stock still exist) are at a premium and second hand are just as steep
the D600 at some sites are more than a few hundred cheaper than here in OZ,but local has the
12 years warranty on its side
