New lens for D3100?

So I'm thinking of buying a Nikon AF 70-300mm f4-5.6G Lens within the next month i have had a look on some websites and there was something about no auto focus on the D3100 so my question is if i got this lens would it be only manuel focus and if so would it be hard to say focus on a harvester in a wheat field at 300mm?

How strange. DP Review lists that the 3100 has auto-focus and the description of this lens has AF in it!!!
Well, I'll be interested to see what the story is. If it's true, consider a different brand lens.

Well, it's cheap enough, Jim. Have a good look through it to see whether you can spot any fungus on the elements.
As for only MF, and no VR/IS, well, that's all I've got. It's fun, even if it can be a bit slow sometimes. Mine's a 75-205.
Like, I couldn't get a BIF unless it was really dawdling.

I wouldn't bother with that particular lens to be honest.

It'll get 'ya some longer focal length shots, but nothing worth writing home about once you get to the really long end!
(it's notoriously soft at the long end).

From memory, this is the only G-lens that is not AF-S, so it won't AF on your D3100.

Because of this, I reckon it'll become more of a frustration than an asset, as you will struggle to get clear sharp images with it, and you'll end up chasing your tail wondering what's going wrong.


Even tho it's cheap, I'd say don't waste that $100 ... and save it for a better quality lens!
As already mentioned, even a S/H 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR lens will be a better option.

Otherwise at that price point and new, look for a Tamron 70-300mm with VC.
I think they sell for low $400's online.

Either of those will yield you much nicer long focal length images than you will ever get with the cheaper Nikon lens.

Sigma still makes the 70-300 f/4.-5.6 with OS(stabilized) and non OS, and I think this is supposedly slightly better at the longer end too. They're pretty cheap brand new and will AF too... about $180 for the non OS and abotu $300 for the OS version.
