D7000 or should I wait for the pending release of the D7100

Hi, I'm looking at upgrading my D5000. I really like the D7000, but ..it was released back in 2010. So I'm sure that Nikon has a new upgrade pending.

..does any one have any details on the D7100
..I don't want to buy the D7000 only to find out the it has just been superseeded.
..prices on the D7000 are quite competitive at the movement.

Any advise would be handy.

The D7100 doesn't exist until it appears on the Nikon product list.

If you sit back and wait for rumoured new models to appear you will never purchase a camera.

Most importantly with advice on camera bodies, what do you want to photograph, what lenses do you own and what is it about the D5000 that is limiting you ability to get the images that you want?

When I purchased the D5000 it came as a kit..18/55 and 55/200.
I have also purchased a sigma 10/24 and 18/200.
These sigma lens are now my main lens of choice.

The only real reason that a new camera is on the horizon is that my sister is always wanting to borrow my camera. She likes it so much that she what's to buy it. (loves the flip out lcd screen) So to help her out and to get me upgraded, I am looking at the d7000. I'm keeping the sigma lens so a Nikon upgrade is the only option.

Since you actually have a camera, you have benefit of waiting it out if u like.
If something had happened to your DSLR I'd say just buy the D7000 straight away.

But since you're in no hurry, you can just wait til something's announced.
Then you have the option of buying the new model or the older one at discount prices.
Since Photokina is next month, probably just wait one month and see what pops up around the corner.

I tend to buy DSLRs on the cheap when they're about to be superseded. I don't really have a need for leading edge technology and by the end of a model's life, everything there is to know about that camera is published somewhere on the net so I know exactly what I'm getting.

My thinking is that if a D7100 doesn't appear at Photokina next month , you probably won't see a replacement this year. Unlike the D600, there are not even any substantial rumours of a D7100 appearing soon.

If you need a new body, the D7000 body is currently only $809 at EGlobal that is pretty good value for an excellent camera

I would definitely be waiting at this stage with Photokina coming up. The D7000 although a good body and well priced right now, is getting on, and you are correct it is due for replacement. The pro-sumer crop body the D300s is way overdue. I wonder how much longer Nikon can keep selling them. Nothing wrong with the current body, no reason to rush with potentially an announcement forthcoming.

You can't believe how happy I am to have stumbled across this discussion as I am in a similar situation. I managed to find a near-mint D5000 that came with an 18-200 Nikkor VR G-II and a Tokina 11-16 f2.6 although the lack of a drive motor means no AF with the Tokina. This compliments the other camera (D100 that is very old) and a range of Nikkor lenses I already have from my film days.

I had been looking a possible upgrade to the D7000 prior to finding the D5000 so it seems it would be best for me to wait for any upgrades in Sept/Oct timeframe in case a new model is released.

Slightly different to your situation but greatly appreciate everybody advice they have given in this thread.

I wouldn't worry about the D7000 becoming superseded. It is already superseded by the time of release.

Ian. Though "new" for the "brand", I mean it would be already superseded by whatever is in the development/production pipeline. The latest released model would not be the only thing a coy would rely on. It would be funding future models.

D300s was released way before the D7000 and it's still 'yet to be replaced'!

I wouldn't be holding my breath for a D7K replacement.
But as Swifty said, you have the benefit of already having a camera to play with, so waiting is not such a bad idea.

In a way Am is almost spot on.
There's no point on deciding on a purchase(or not) simply by the currency of the model you desire.
That is, just because a model is suddenly superseded, doesn't impede the operation of that model in any way.

Yeah the new model may have a few cool features or more Mp, but is that really the point.
The decision should be made on the merits of that specific model alone .. does it fit the needs and requirements you have.

Hmm... It really annoys me if I buy some bit of tech gear and a new version is out shortly after. So I'll stall until the new releases hit the shelves. I wouldn't buy the D7000 now as it is almost 2yo, and there will be new DSLRs out sometime in the next 12 months ( but maybe not a d7000 replacement too soon.)

However, the d7000 is a great camera - I've had mine for over 18 months, and I won't be upgrading from it for a while.

I am not sure the step from d5100 to d7000 is a big leap, but the price of the d7000 is low enough now that it is not a high risk buy. You may want to consider the d3200 though - 24 mpixels + most of the features of the d5100 and not very expensive. (it has a higher pixel density than the famed d800, and the dpr review is pretty positive.)

It's not really pending, and looking at how long people 'put off' a D700 to wait for a D800, I'd say go the D7000 right now and start using it.

Just a thought,
bodies are out of date very quickly.
I'd put my money into glass as you've already got a nikon body.
Unless you've 100% learnt your body of course.......

If you've the funds for a d7k then you must be halfway there to a 70-200mm 2.8
and I know which one I'd rather have in my bag.

Saying that, I've just purchased a d7k but I didnt already have a dslr body.
