best medium zoom for 7D

Hi to all the canon shooter

I need some advice so I can advise others { my brother in law} who has recently bought a new 7D..hes after a medium zoom..firstly does canon make a crop sensor only type lens ? and if so would they bet a better bet..if not any suggestions or do tamron/sigma offer a good alternative perhaps a 28-75 tammy ??

Hi Steve,

Canon makes two lenses, EF-S and EF lenses.

EF lenses are for FF bodies only, EF-S lenses won't fit FF bodies.

EF-S lenses are specifically for crop sensored bodies only. But crop sensored bodies can mount both EF and EF-S lenses.

As for medium zoom, The EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS gets a loot of good reviews! Another is the EF-S 15-85 lens.

Or you can go to 'L' lenses, they are the professional line of canon lenses but the mid zoom starts from 24mm. The two are 24-70 f2.8 and 24-105 f4 IS.

(IS is the VR counterpart of Nikon)

I didn't realise that the crop sensor lenses wouldn't be compatible with the FF bodies...Im now more educated and Ill pass along the info on that and your suggestion for lenses ....

Theres a lot of choices of EF-S lenses, just try to search and see suits his needs and what fits the budget!

the sigma 18-200 is a good all round lens that i used as my main lens for a few years. I like the versatility of the lens and the picture quality of mine was very good. Then you can go into a L series lens and have grate results.

The Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is a very nice lens
I also have a sigma 18-250 - which is my 'lazy' lens, IQ is ok and its a bit slow. Good value.

Another for the Canon f/2.8 17-55mm its not cheap though its a fantastic lens on a cropped sensor.
I dont have a 7D, though I use it on my 40D its fast and sharp..

Schy has misled you slightly, the EF lenses are not for FF bodies only. They fit any Canon dslr body.

Tamron 17-50 2.8 non IS is my vote. I use this combo and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. The other option I have heard good stuff about is the Sigma 17-70.

I think he's in Iraq at the moment..but im pretty sure he gets my emails there..he's over here for all of August..so im hopefully we can find some time for a shoot..

The Canon 17-55mm IS 2.8 is an awesome lens on the 7D, I love it. It is however rather heavy, and spendy too.

just to update you all on the final lens choice..my brother in law opted for a 24-105 F4 L ....seems like a pretty decent choice..he also said a wide angle prime was in the wind and possible FF camera in a couple of years if he was still into the photography gig

Thanks for the update. Interesting choice for a crop camera but it depends on what you shoot I guess. For me 24 is nowhere near wide enough.

yes its a tad lacking at the wide end on a crop body..but should be a great portrait/medium zoom..he knows this and is already looking at wide primes ......and so it begins....LOL
