    new lens

    I'm trying to decide between a sigma 50mm f1.4 or sigma 30mm f1.4 prime.
I think that part of my problem is indecision what i want to really get from it.

I am inclined for the 50mm for its portrait value and general use in travel, small events etc...

    i have a 17-70mm and a 70-200f2.8.

    on a k5 .. 50mm--70mm

    please help me think..

Hi I have the Sigma 30 it is a fantastic lens. The focal length you are looking for depends on what you want to shoot. If portraits is your go then 50 would be good as it is equivalent to 75mm on your apsc sensor. The 30 is equiv to 50 on the apsc sensor. I use mine predominantly for street photography.
Maybe you could try using your 17-70 and leave it on each focal length and try shooting it like a prime (feet zoom). See how you feel about the results.
    See my work on

    Thanks Lantern
Good idea, and i'll think about some advice given to me by an ex professional photographer... concentrate on one type of photography at a time to make yourself proficinet (expert) in that and then move on to another...

So have I, but I would not go so far as this in my consideration of it. OK, yes...

If you do decide on a 50mm from SIgma, strongly consider the macro version, capable of 1:1 reproduction.

    It's a DG, or full-frame lens, so there's a body upgrade potential.

People also rave about the 70mm macro, but it's somewhat dearer, and more specialised in application I think.

Look up samples of these - or any other lens - on Flickr.
