just upgraded from 60D to 5D MII,now need a new UWA to replace 10-20mm

OK,
Finally got my self a 5D MII ,
didn't realize the 10-20mm sigma was a crop sensor lens (bummer).
Have had a quick look around some other photo forums and am undecided on what i should look to getting to replace the siggy.
ideally UWA that i can easily interchange between 60 D and 5DMII.
Price wise really dont want to go over $600.
Have found a lot 5DMII owners go for the 17-40 L,HAVE ALSO SEEN A FEW HAVE GONE FOR THE SIGGY 12-24MM(seems to be the FF version of the 10-20mm)?
Have also had a bit of a looksee at some of the primes around,20mm,24mm siggy and canon.
Mainly lens will be for landscape photography and night shots.
so any other 5DMII owners, what do you have and use for your wide angle scapes???

FWIW:

the 10-20mm range on a crop sensor is equivalent to a 16-32mm lens, so you don't miss much in going for the Canon 17-40mm

Whereas the Siggy 12-24mm on full frame is more akin to an 7.5-15mm lens on an crop sensor(Canon).

If you don't use filters, then go with the Sigma lens.
If you like to use filters, then get the 17-40mm.

Tokina also have an exceptional lens in their 16-28mm f/2.8 that will come closer to your max budget than the Canon equivalent, and from what I've seen(of I@M's lens) it's definitely one to think about.

Please correct me if I am wrong Arthur but would'nt a 12-24 become 19-38mm on a canon crop sensor. Adam I use a 17-40mm on mine and find it fits the bill nicely,if you shop around you should be able to pick it up in the 700 to 800 bracket, if using mainly for landscapes f/4 is all you will need, nice sharp lens.

Wow! That is a behinder. However, the FF equivalent would certainly be the 12-24s (the aspherical one - ASP, now discontinued).
They need to be specified "DG" for FF, not "DC", which is for crop sensors.

You could sell the 5dII and forget the whole ff experience...
I don't have a ff but a friend of mine uses his 17-40L and swears by it.

If you would have bought the Tokina 11-16mm lens instead of the 10-20 Sigma, you could use it on the 5D2 from about 14.5mm and up.
I use it on my 5D3.
15mm on a FF is REALLY wide!

Personally, I'd go for the 17-40 myself.
If you find you don't like it, or don't use it, at least it will still have good re-sale value later on.
17mm on a full frame is like 10.6mm on a Canon crop.

Correct, but the 12-24 on a 5D would be the equivalent of an 8-15 lens when used on a crop. Think the other way around and you will realise he was correct.

I am pretty sure his Sigma 10-20 would also work on a 5D2 but it would vignette until about 17mm. Unsure about AF & aperture (might be same as the 11-16, unsure) but I have seen it used on a 5D2.

thanks to all for your info,
I ended up selling my 10-20 to my mate and with the funds and a bit i won a 12-24 on ebay over the weekend,
now waiting to get it in my hot little hands.
The 10-20 did vignette quite badly all through the range on the 5d2,it was hard to let it go ,but was easier to let it go as it is now with my good m8 who is stoked to have it like i was when i got it.
I will see what it is like for a bit and look at some L glass in the future.

Hi Adam.

Just wondering if you are still happy with the Sigma 12-24 ?
I am also looking for a wide lens. I have a 5dMk2 and have narrowed my choices down to the Sigma 12-24 and the 17-40L.
I have tried both and while I was happy with the 17-40, I find that it is a bit too close in range to my 24-105L, so I am only improving the range from 17-24, whereas with the Sigma I would get a new wider range completely.

sorry for the late reply,been too busy lately.
the 12-24 is crazy wide on the 5d2,is still a lot of fun ,but i have noticed for some or most of my recent landscapes i have been bumping the zoom up to about 14 -15 mm.
some shots the 12mm is good ,but majority of the time 14mm - 16mm.
have never used the 17-40 so i cant compare.
