But then again maybe we're both wrong and Nikon prices this one as they recently have their latest gear releases ... ie. at the acceptable end of the spectrum.
(but then again, pigs fly ... and usually in a southerly direction for the winter ... and it's currently winter in Japan where hell has frozen over so there's very little chance of that ever happening! )

Hmm, list price for the 600 f4 VR is around the $12,000 mark, the 500 f4 VR about $10,000, the 400 f2.8 about $10,500, but you will find cheaper if you shop around. The prices of these long lenses are basically dictated by the size and number of the glass elements. The 600 f4 needs a front element of about 150mm or larger, the 500 f4 VR 125mm, the 400 f2.8 VR 142mm, so the 800 f5.6 would need about the same as the 400 f2.8, ie 142mm, so my guess is that it won't be any cheaper than the 600 f4 VR, so think about AU$13,000+.

However, I wonder how much will be gained by someone like Sar owning it. I have seen his excellent results from his 600 f4 + 1.4x TC - an effective 840mm f5.6, and I would be surprised if the 800 would have a significant enough advantage for him to own it as well, considering the cost, weight and size penalty for someone to lug around as well as their 600 f4. Of course, you could argue that the 800 will accept a 1.4x TC to make a 1120mm f8, but than, I have also seen Sar's results using the 600 + 2x TCIII and the same applies.

This 800/5.6 VR will be more interesting for someone who owns a 500/4 (don't take it personally, Lance ! ) than the 600/4 users.
I wouldn't mind to get one though...

Funny you should be mentioning this lens. Its too heavy and costly. Mongo had been looking for the past few weeks for an older Nikkor 800mm f8 AI-s and he will be happy with that.

BTW - anyone who owns a 400 f2.8 with a 20E111 converter will probably get just as good results as the new 800 f5.6 less one EV. So, do not see a great market for it unless it fell out of the sky in Mongo's back yard in which case he would not seek to expel it .

Like the combo 200/2 VRII+TC-20EIII, the FX sensor of 12mpix gives pretty good results wide open.
On the 16mpix of the D7000 or the 36mpix of the D800, it's another story...that's why it's better to have a 800/5.6 prime (or a 600/4+TC-14EII combo) instead of the 400/2.8+TC-20EIII.

For sure, the 800/5.6+TC-14EII will outperform the 600/4+TC-20EIII combo ! And you still have two more TCs (x1.7 and x2) to play with the 800mm...

The sensor resolution makes a huge difference when using a fast prime with TC, wide open.
I'm afraid that the next 24mpix DX sensor would accept many lens+TC combos...

In a theoretical world, where this lens actually existed, as opposed to being rumoured!!

a probably pricing structure could look something like this:

500/4=$8000 600/4=$10000 400/2.8=$8500 800/5.6= ?$10-11K?

where Canon's lenses looks something like this:

500/4= $7800 ; 600/4=$9500 ; 400/2.8= $11-12K ; 800/5.6= $13500

of course this is pending an actual call from Nikon to announce the lens, and to begin with as we all come to expect it'll have a huge initial price premium to factor in as well. But for the lens to settle down to an approximately 400/2.8 level is not really unrealistic.

prices were all amassed from various grey dealers and for the Canon 400/2.8 off a couple of random ebayers.

Actually I'm glad I replied to this thread again, and in doing so, tried to get a feel for what a lens like this would approximately sell for.

Times seem to have changed (for the better too!!) as I remember not too long ago, you purchased a Canon over a Nikon simply because all of their lenses were so much cheaper.
In fact by so much in many cases, that I remember a long gone member(SeeSee) who already had a swag of Nikon kit, including a couple of cameras(D50 and D300) and various lenses, including a 300/2.8 from Tokina.. he ended up acquiring a Canon 500/4 + 50 or 60D for less than the price of a solitary Nikon 500/4!!

That was about the standard price difference between the two brands, both locally sourced and from overseas sources.

Now looking at eglobalcameras (as a rough guide), the Nikon is listed at $7800, and the Canon equivalent is listed at $8300(give or take a few dollars for each)!!!

two good things have come out of this!
Nikon are finally getting it .. people don't take kindly too beign ripped off excessively!! .. and seem to have responded since I last checked pricing of their really expensive stuff.
(I do this occasionally.. not out of need, just curiosity).

two lenses that have always caught my eye, in the Nikon lineup: 200/2(I want.. possibly need!) and the 200-400/4 .. a very handy, if slightly bulky lens(for my purposes).

possibly in the next year or so, I may have either one, or the other going by the recent price check I just did!!


$10-12K for this rumoured 800mm doesn't seem like a bad deal, and I reckon Nikon have a market for it.

BUT!! ..... Nikon still have one or two holes in their current lineup than need fixing NOW! to appease the masses.
300/4 needs VR, and the 80-400VR needs a freshen up.

At $10K thereabouts, I would try and get hold of a test unit with intent of buying should it perform, and as all other Nikkor Super Tele's, I have no doubt it would.

gee Im so glad I don't do Birding..these lenses are massive money..Ill stick to people at close range I think ....good luck to those that manage it..although Id love a 300mmF2.8 for the footy ruck taps

You'll be surprised at how handy an 800/5.6 would be for those really unintrusive candid street photo sessions!!

Even for people at close range too

... and as you haven't defined close range, I'm going to assume this means people in the same neighbourhood, or house, or public event ..... or even the average farm block.
