Tethering - D800 to the New iPad or Macbook pro

Hiya,

I am looking at tethering the D800 to my macbook or iPad when it comes, and need the know how as i haven't done this before.

I understand its to do with the software and wondering if anyone who has done this recommends any?

i have seen it done so that the files go direct into lightroom and understand that the iPad would work only as a bigger viewing screen.

i'm not sure you can tether live without breaking the iPad's software

When it comes, read the user manual. Nikon have software for tethering, and you use that, along with the manual to setup your camera.

I tether a D800 onto an MBP for studio work before, but currently no MBP has USB3 so you can only use it at USB2.0 speed.

This was done with Lightroom 3, which I prefer for tethering over Nikon NX, as my assistant can sit there and make adjustments while I keep shooting, I prefer my colleagues to be sufficient on universal programs rather than brand specific programs such as Nikon or Canon etc.

I have LR4 and from my reading it seems that an update for LR4 will be needed to tether successfully which will hopefully come out around the same time the d800 is delivered.

If you want to tether to an iPad, what about using an eye-fi card. It won't have a physical tether but over a close distance it will work really well. Use an app like shutter snitch and you are ready to go.

No personal ownership experience but I have tried eye-fi on a colleague's p&s/iPad setup.
Works fine but a little slow and seems temperamental, but not sure if that was the hardware or software playing up.
I wouldn't use eye-fi for heavy duty shooting. Not sure how well it'll cope with D800 RAW files if that's the way you shoot.

Another option is to use Lightroom + airdisplay. Airdisplay is an app that functions as an extra monitor to your macbook. Tether to Lightroom, and use airdisplay to view (as long as you are on a wifi network). http://brentbat.wordpress.com/tag/lightroom/
