    D800 firmware update

A D800 firmware update hjas just been announced:

    http://nikonasia-en.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/7488

When a still image was captured while viewing existing images in playback mode, the monitor turned off, the memory card access lamp glowed steadily, and, in some rare cases, the camera ceased to respond to operations. This issue has been resolved.
When the Wireless Transmitter WT-4 was used with certain settings applied, RAW images were also transferred when "Wireless transmitter" > "Transfer settings" > "Send file as" was set to "JPEG only". This issue has been resolved.
A dark shadow sometimes appeared at the bottom edge of images captured with Active D-Lighting set to any option other than "Off" with "Image area" set to "5:4 (30x24)". This issue has been resolved.

Interestingly the D800 file is about 9705 kb and the recently released D700 update is a 1671 kb file.
I wonder if the D800 update addresses more than just the one item they mention.

    Not necesse ... celery!!
The firmware is a bin file, but the file is the entire firmware itself, not just the updates as such.
That is, the firmware file in the D800 is 8x larger in terms of memory space than the D700 file used to be.

Think of it as the operating system.
With firmware you don't update the operating system as you do for your PC with individual files that fix the issues, the entire firmware is updated(by Nikon) and you load the entire operating system(nee. firmware) as a single unit.

You can't really dissect the firmware file to see what the individual updates really are(even tho it can be done, it's a difficult task).
