Transfering photos from iPhoto to Aperture

Hi there, this question may have been asked before so if it has, please feel free to direct me to the posts. And I do hope I can ask this question here even if its not to do with actual photography. I have looked everywhere on the Apple site but it doesn't answer my question.

I just recently downloaded Aperture 3 and have attempted to transfer my photos from iPhoto to A3 but each time I import an event from iPhoto to A3 it duplicates EVERY image (even if I have never edited it coz I know iPhoto duplicate the image if it has been edited). I am using iPhoto browser to import an album at a time coz I can't use import iPhoto library coz it's 260gig and there is not enough room to hold the 2 copies (one in iPhoto and one in Aperture). I think it is so big coz every edit in iPhoto I do, creates a new version of the photo?

Can anyone help me with an easy way to transfer the photos?

Make sure you have a backup first . You should have a check box for copy or move, check move, not copy. i.e. in Aperture, file, import, iphotolibrary, check box "move"
